Andrew is 14

Walking to school from our old house.

Abbey's 7th and Andrew's 1rst.

Moving to our home.

I think this was Abbey's First Communion celebration-I still have that little suit-he looked so cute in it.

Mom and Andrew trip to Chicago.

Andrew's birthday is today~I feel like I skip birthday's on this blog but it's not intentional, it's just an indication of other things going on.  This is such a busy time of year and we have 3 birthdays within 2 weeks-Andrew's, Janey's, and Abbey's.  It takes a lot of organization as I want to give them each their due here in our home.

Things I want to remember about Andrew (I might have written this all before, but off the top of my head these are the things that stick out):

Andrew was the baby that was born to me after two devastating miscarriages.  Miscarriages that changed my life, in so many ways.  I learned to appreciate pregnancies, even those that were filled with sickness.  I learned to take nothing for granted.  I learned what mourning means, how to pull myself up from depression, how to look ahead and not behind and this took longer-how to not envy others for their good fortune when I felt I wasn't having much good fortune myself.  I learned how to get through really tough ultrasounds where I'd be afraid of bad news again, and to say Hail Mary's when I couldn't feel him move (he was just sleeping after all.)

He arrived red, crying, and with a ton of thick dark hair.  I was so so happy.  We all were.
He had all day colic.
I pushed myself more than I have ever pushed myself physically in my life -holding him all day and he'd sleep on me at night.
We grew very attached.
I learned I could do anything.
But it was hard, no lying, with three other kids to care for.

When he could move he was happy!
He was into everything.
He never stopped moving.

He was such a joy (and still is) as he grew.
He'd say the funniest things ever, and if we laughed he'd get mad and say, "Don't laugh at me!"
He'd say "kiss and hug, kiss and hug" anytime I'd walk out the door without him.  It was a huge ritual, sometimes slowing me down, but who could resist that?

He was curious about everything and everyone, his confidence was obvious even as a little guy.
He enjoys interacting with people of all ages and all walks of life-down to infants, teens, up to the elderly. Everyone is his friend.

He hasn't changed much.  He still has an air of confidence about him, and is up for a challenge.
He still goes 100 mph, fills up his day with his own little schedule depending on the season.
He is an excellent student, hardly ever gets stressed about demanding school work, or the amount of work he has to do. He has always loved school, and always loved his friends.  He is independent (we always joke he can live on his own and be just fine-he really could) and makes great thoughtful decisions.

Happy Birthday Andrew!!!

Happy Birthday Andrew!

Andrew is 10!  Andrew is such a great fun-loving kid, and such a helper.  Jeff and I joke that Andrew could survive for weeks by himself.  He knows how to get around town, how to make his own meals, how to operate just about every appliance-he learns quickly and observes and takes in everything around him.
He hears everything also-he cracks us up with his ability to catch the little things and then bring them up at dinner.  (The teenagers aren't fond of this trait but we can't help but laugh.)

We love you so much Andrew!  You have brought such joy to us all!

Happy Birthday Andrew!

My Little Helpers

I think one of the most precious blessings of having a much younger sibling is the opportunity to learn how to love and care for babies and toddlers.  Each of my older children has had this opportunity many times, but seeing Andrew and Patrick so interested in Janey just fills my heart up.  Andrew has been waiting until I would say it was ok for her to hold her and carry her while he was standing....he was thrilled and so careful for the few minutes I let him.  (When I was reading The Kitchen House I told him about children his age whose daily job was care of babies Janey's age-his eyes were pretty big at that responsibility!)  I also taught him how to change her diaper and clothing which is not small feat because she certainly has the wigglies.  He is going to be such a good Dad.

And Patrick of course needed to get in on all the action also, although his favorite thing to do is giving her hugs and kisses.  When she was fussy for a few minutes the other day I asked Janey, "Why are you so fussy baby?"  And he said, "I think it might be because we've all given her too many kisses."

Things I Want To Remember...

I love when Isaac texts me from college.  I know he misses us but loves college too and it's so nice to hear from him and encourage him.  He's a darn good kid.

Janey was so good today.  She slept in her bassinet today for 2 hours!  That's a small miracle.  And she pooped herself out of 3 outfits, no joke.

I love good friends.  Today I visited with one today, just for an hour, and we laughed and talked politics and Christmas and a bunch of other stuff.  It was refreshing.

Today when I picked Abbey up she asked how my day was.  I have found that what this means is "please ask me how my day was too" because something icky happened.  She needed help with some friend drama and I just love that girl.  And being a teenage girl is hard.  Darn hard.  Take the high road is what I always say, thanks to my super smart mom who taught me the same thing.

Matt was in a mad scramble to find a Halloween costume for a school event tomorrow.  We decided to blindly pull things out of the costume bin and put something together and he did it.  He is so flexible and gets the 'big family" thing, and I love him for it.

Andrew and Patrick made us some popcorn after bath time.  Popcorn is another one of Andrew's specialty   He told Patrick to "go get a train" as the popcorn was popping.  I laughed because that is a little quirky thing Andrew loved to do when he was little.  Put one of his beloved trains in the bottom of the popcorn bowl and watch it get buried as the popcorn covered it.  I said, "Oh Andrew, really?"  He said, "Mother I am just trying to relive the moments of my childhood, now that I'm a kid."  He cracks me up.

First Communion and A Birthday

Last weekend Andrew made his First Communion.  This is a big deal for me...I love First Communion. Here he is in his finery...I let him pick his tie out (not as fun as the girls are with the dresses and flowers and hair and all but I try!).

We also celebrated Matthew's 13th birthday. (And smart girl that I am I combined those two parties into one compressed one, without ever looking at ideas on Pinterest but keeping everything really really simple knowing that for me right now, that is the best way to go.  Actually for me, forever, that is the best way to go.)

So I officially have THREE teenagers living in my house.  I can do this right?  RIGHT???

On to the next event...Isaac is graduating in a matter of weeks!  Wowzerrs!

Brothers

Andrew set up a school for Patrick and it was so cute it hurt my heart-complete with gym class (run around the house 3 times then do stretches) and reading time, and coloring lessons.

I just love when my kids get along.  I have to remember these moments because sometimes it seems they can't be in the same room together without some sort of argument breaking out.  These two can be great friends but Patrick can be quite demanding when it comes to playing things HIS way.  Youngest child syndrome?  Maybe.  They are more adaptable in many ways, but in other ways I think they make up for that in exerting their "right" to do things their way when they can.  We are working on that one.

A Birthday Pool Party

Andrew and Abbey's birthdays are both coming up, so we did something we always wanted to do: rent out our city pool.  The only hours you can do this are after it is closed to the public, which means a late night, 9-11 p.m.  Which makes it even more fun I think.

That's Aunt Tracy, Jeff's sister, who swam the WHOLE time with the kids.  She even went off the high dive because Andrew begged her, and down the slide 100 times.  She had kids hanging off her all night long.  What a fun aunt!  Thank you Aunt Tracy!

Happy Birthday My Sweet Little Boy

Andrew is seven today.
Yesterday he was only six.
Then he went to bed, (so excited) and woke up a whole year older.
Why does it seem so easy, but hurts my heart and racks my brain?
How do the years go so fast?

Just yesterday he was my sweet little baby, born with a full head of hair and dark sparkly eyes and a chronic case of colic that I can honestly look back fondly on.  It was us against his stomach and we came out champions.

A new bike.
And a few other things...most especially a Lock Box to keep all his hard earned money safe...something he's been reminding me he wanted all year long.  (And boy, is that kid good at savings.  He almost always decides to save instead of spend.)
He wanted chocolate cake with chocolate frosting with blue "trim" he called it.  I get pretty nervous with cake requests...I am NOT a good cake frosting-er.  As you can see.

Hope you had a great day Andrew.
We love you.

Finally Off The Sidelines

He has spent his first 6 years watching all his silbings play soccer.  (And they have all given up the sport, after all those games!)

FINALLY, he has the chance to be on the field.

We have a little 6 game season soccer program that works perfectly...no travel, no long practices.
And the best ever...Jeff signed up to be the coach.

The main duties of coaching at this age:
1. Tying shoes.

2. Pointing to the right goal.

Birthday Two for One

While I was out front taking these pictures:023 026SOMEONE (I wonder who??? no, I don't) decided to climb into my van and use the cake box (that I had JUST picked up!!!) as a stepping stool:041I tried to patch it up, but this was the best I could do. It was seriously squished and all the original frosting was smashed on the top of the box. But guess what? It still worked!!! Imagine that!!!046059 We rented Mr. Jumpy Dinosaur…something we don’t usually do, but we had a block party AFTER the birthday party so we knew we would get massive usage out of it. I seriously am in LOVE with Mr. Jumpy Dinosaur. Although I must apologize to him, because even though he came with a long set of instructions, I payed absolutely NO attention to any of them. I was supposed to sort of “guard” him from danger. I left him to fend for himself completely. I thought he could handle it, and he stepped up to the responsiblity beautifully.
A great photo of the love of my life:
Aunt Jill, I knew you would love this one!039
