Ordinary Days

A little further in my kitchen spring cleaning. It's slow going.

Abbey was asked to prom.  I offered my old formal dresses to her at no charge, they fit and everything!, and she still turned them down.  Picky, picky, picky.

Here I am in the white one, gloves and all. (That probably had something to do with Abbey not wanting to wear the white dress-I lost the gloves and really, they make the outfit don't you think?) Have I ever told you my prom stories?  Oh, they're good.  Really good.  In the horrifying way that makes me laugh now, but not so much back then.

While we are talking dresses...I am trying to control myself over baby girl summer dresses but oh boy, it isn't easy.  I LOVE little girl dresses.  Janey and I share a closet presently so that helps a little.  And really, how many dresses does a baby need?  But it is SO nice to just buy her clothes with no feedback from her whatsoever.  We moms of daughters all know that doesn't last very long!  I say, "Janey look at this one with the sail boats, isn't it just so sweet?  Don't you think you need it for church?"  And she smiles at me, and I take that as a yes.

How's that for a gray sky?

My mom and dad came up and visited for a day.  My Dad cut down a tree for me, trimmed another,  and my mom talked with Janey and I for hours.  It was great.

A few funny things I heard this week that I don't want to forget:
Patrick came to me and in a very concerned voice said, "Mom, my mouth wants food but my tummy hurts."

He also came to me after soccer practice and said in a very disappointed-sounding voice, "Guess what Mom?  My soccer coach has a, has a, has a... mustache."   Ever since he's been really little, Patrick has not been a fan of mustaches and beards in general, I have no idea why.  But the completely dejected look on his face...like he waited all winter for this soccer season and now THIS has to happen-the whole season down the drain because of a dumb ol' mustache-cracked me up.

And Andrew asked me in the car out of the blue, "Mom, did you have to go to nursing school?"  I knew right away he meant to learn how to "nurse" the babies-so cute what goes on in their little heads.

  3. Your prom dresses are killing me. I remember wearing one exactly like your turquoise one, only it was black and white. Super chic!
Janey's dresses are too perfect!!! Exactly what I would pick.

    1. I stand over the recycling bin and "sort"...lots of pitching. I have files for each of the kids but those are just for really important stuff. I reply to anything that needs it right away, or if it's a schedule/calendar, hang it on the bulletin board.

  7. LOL! Doesn't Abbey know that "vintage" is in??? I think the white dress has some great makeover potential. The other one....well, we know our era, don't we??? Annie has prom on Friday. She made her dress but I helped her finish and it was a marathon sewing weekend! There was even some "Prama" - she didn't get in the middle of it, but boy oh boy, girls are ridiculous! I say it every year....when we went to prom, we asked a date, he showed up, mom and dad snapped a few pictures and we went. Now, it is an event. Elaborate invitations, limos, hair, dresses, post-prom, etc....and the poor boys - just an accessory. All that aside, Annie is excited to go to her first prom!

  8. I told Celia that prom is really for moms ... and when she goes I'm going to answer the door to let her date in whilst wearing one of my old prom dresses with her dad in a tuxedo just for old times sake ... and after she leaves, we may just turn the lights down and dance until she gets home.

I got an eye roll but hey.

I'm a sucker for little girl dresses too, and Charlotte and I have the same taste as well! Imagine that :)

  9. I saved my old prom dress too...and my daughter really wanted to wear it, but could figure out how to update it enough to get away with it. Yours is gorgeous..and fits her like a glove. She is beautiful and I hope she has a great time! We had prom last week...

  10. I have a random question... I currently use Shutterfly for photos but am unhappy. Do you use Persnickity for your prints too? I am weary of going to digital scrapbook but would if I knew it was easy, faster & a good quality. I'd be interested in your thoughts. Thanks!

    1. I have only used Persnickety for scrapbook prints and cards/invitations and the quality is great. I use a local grocery photo place for prints and it's just OK. Persnickety is much more professional in their printing.

  12. I love these posts Sarah! I wish I kept some of my dresses. And Janey's dresses are adorable. My baby is a boy, but I still find myself looking at the girl things:)) Your parents seem amazing. You're very lucky to have them both in your life. I can't imagine my Dad cutting down a tree for me :)))

  13. I am in the midst of spring cleaning too! Who knew expecting your "baby" (first year college freshmen) home would stir up the nesting all over again???!!! Can't believe Katie and Isaac are almost sophomores!!!!

  14. I know you have posted this before, but where do you get your actual scrapbooks? I remember them all looking the same. You are an inspiration to me in so many ways, especially as a wonderful mom and an incredible organizer, two things that I am constantly trying to improve upon. Thanks for sharing on your blog!

  17. Ha! Prom dresses! I have one with sleeves as big as my head--maybe bigger. Offered them as a really creative halloween costume to my 14 yo daughter (80's prom queen, zombie prom queen?) and she TURNED THEM DOWN. For Halloween! Honestly, she was probably afraid they would look too good and people wouldn't think she'd dressed up, right? I am sure the gloves were what held Abbey back, for sure. I still have the gloves for my dresses, so that wasn't the problem around here! And can I say, I have some hilarious stories, too. One of my favorites was the homemade corsage. Pretty sure my date forgot about the corsage at the last minute, and tried to make his own with help from his brother. They used black electric tape to wrap a white rose and red carnation together. (My dress was kind of a silvery plum color.) When he pinned it on, the rose stuck straight up and tangled in my hair, so before long it started to flop over. The photographer had to ask me to "prop up your rose, pleae." Bwahahaha!

  19. Super good chuckles with your boys! reminds me of my kiddos. The other night my 5 yr old wanted dessert so bad, but he was having a hard time finishing dinner, so my 6 yr old daughter is "helping" him, literally spoon feeding him and she says to her 5 yr old brother, "Just eat and never stop"
    Gotta love 'em!
