Summer Memories

One of my earliest summer memories is riding in the back of my Dad's VW Bug with my 2 sisters and my mom and dad up front.  We would take a little Sunday drive to the soft serve ice cream store.  The leather seats just have a certain smell that bring all those memories flooding back.

My Dad has owned probably a dozen of these little cars (and they all smell the same inside!)  Last time I was visiting home, out of the garage came the bright yellow one he has been working on, and my kids all had to have a turn inside.  Isaac can't drive stick, and he certainly wasn't going to learn on this car, but he would have loved to take it for a spin.

My mom tells me to announce on my blog that it's for sale.  I'm not so sure why she is eager to get rid of this one, because she must know that there is another right around the corner that needs some TLC from a certain grandpa that knows them like the back of his hand.

Both Isaac and Abbey were adding up their savings in their heads so they could make an offer to Grampy.

(Matt is missing in this photo shoot-I think he was having more fun at target practice with his BB gun.)

  1. Oh there's nothing like a punch buggy! Or the identifiable squeal from engine coming down the road :o)

  2. Oh look at your dad! He looks like he's in his element! And the kids look fantastic behind the wheel! I think there's a bug in your future.

    I voted for you!

I love how smells evoke such memories. And old cars? Classic.

Speaking of BB guns, the mother-of-the-year here, who allowed her sons to have air soft guns, did not properly enforce the "no guns in the house" rule. (They know the proper gear they have to wear outside, yet they will sneak shots in the house.) Well, a freak accident occurred in our house on Saturday night and a pellet hit Billy's eye. We had a really long evening and two visits to the ophthalmologist but thankfully he's going to be ok. It reminds me of the movie A Christmas Story....way to start the summer. Last summer was chipped front teeth and summer before badly broken arm. Sigh.

  10. My grandpa drove a yellow VW Bug just like that one. He used to roll down the windows and swerve into puddles after it rained, dousing my sister and it in water. Thanks for bringing back those memories!

  11. Very cool! You've got to love a man with a passion. :)

And seriously, your boys are all so handsome, but Abbey is over the top. She has such a great style and she absolutely radiates beauty. You have a beautiful family!

Also, I saw a frame at Hobby Lobby the other day that said "Seaside Fun" and thought of you. Weird, right? :)

  14. Gotta love those VW bugs! My mom loves to tell stories of when she and Dad were newly married and owned a green VW. When she talks about it, she always has the biggest grin on her face. Good memories...

  18. My husband {of 34 years} always had VW bugs when we were dating. He sure had fun redoing those bugs!! One was red and the other turquoise. He didn't know how "in" those colors were for today! One of my biggest memories in the 70's in MN is using razor blade scrapers to see where we were going in the winter. Thanks for the memories.

  21. Okay...I happen to adore the "old style" VW bugs. Don't get me wrong, the new ones a spiffy, but I would take a classic over the new ones anyday of the week.
I can do just about all repairs on these cars. I owned at least 4 VW bugs in my lifetime along with a microbus, fast back, karmenghia, 2 rabbits and 2 jettas. I LOVE VWs. How much is he selling it for? Just wondering.
