Apple Crumb Pie

I just couldn't make the same old apple pie again.  Do you ever just get so tired of making the same old recipes again and again?  So I went all out on a limb and tried a crumb topping pie (adapted from a recipe I found on AllRecipes) for a little twist.

Apple Crumb Pie
1 9" pie shell (I used a Pillsbury roll out pie crust.)
6 cups thinly sliced apples
1 TBS lemon juice
2/3 cup white sugar
2 TBS all purpose flour
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/8 tsp ground nutmeg
2/3 cup all purpose flour
2/3 cup packed brown sugar
4 TBS butter

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
Place sliced apples in a large bowl.
Sprinkle with lemon juice.
Add white sugar, 2 TBS flour, cinnamon and nutmeg.
Toss together until apples are well coated.

In a small bowl mix together 2/3 cup flour and brown sugar and cut in butter until mixture in crumbly.

Cover loosely with foil and bake for 25 minutes.  Take off foil and bake for another 25 minutes or until top in golden brown.

  5. Looks good! We are overflowing with apples after our visit to the apple orchard. I found a new apple crisp recipe that I really like - it is on the side of the Jiffy box of apple cinnamon muffins. In the topping you put the box of muffin mix in with oatmeal, butter and brown sugar. Really yummy! I do suggest lowering the sugar amount just a bit.

  9. You must have read my mind. I just bought a huge box of "seconds" from an apple orchard, and we're going to make apple butter and pie today. I've been pondering an apple crumb top for pie instead of the standard crust, and here you are with a recipe. Perfect. I think I'll use it with this recipe for no roll pie crust that I really love. It's easy and I love the taste of homemade.
