Ordinary Days

I took Sammy to the groomers-something I do once a year when I get sick of finding little bits of mulch on my carpet that gets dragged in on his fur.  They asked me at the pet spa (really?? spa??) what I would like for dear Sammy and I said, "Just do whatever you want."  Honestly, I can't answer a question coherently anymore this summer.  I am asked 500 questions a day (one day I will keep track and do a post of all the questions I am asked a day) and I can't think straight-I don't want to think straight when it comes to decisions about a dog's fur.

He looks like a drowned rat.  It is not pretty, you can tell he is so embarrassed that I am blasting his pic all over the internet can't you?  I told him what I tell everyone around here when they receive a bad haircut-"Hair grows back, you'll be fine, get over it."

At the pet SPA, I saw a piece of paper on the bulletin board that said, "Would you like a memento of your cat or dog?  Keep your cat of dog's fur clipping and I will turn them into a sweater or purse for you."

I'm not kidding. Yes it was early in the morning, and yes my brain is fried from summer questions, and yes my vision is blurry from sleeping in my contacts every night, but I saw that ad with my own eyes.  I went home and told Abbey about it and we both gagged and laughed at the same time and I told her I was going to buy her a new purse for her 17th birthday made from Sammy's fur, and maybe the part where the fur had a little poop stuck in it won't get into the purse, or maybe it will.

GROSS, GROSS GROSS.

Let's move onto cute:
Do you think Janey might be teething?

Isaac desperate enough for chocolate chip cookies he actually makes them himself.

Patrick said, "Mmm, yum, fruit salad.  Can I have some?  But not the orange stuff."

Poor Andrew.  On Sunday, he was elbowed in the eye playing basketball on the trampoline.  He thought his eye was gouged out, and the way he screamed, "OWWW!! My eye, my eye, my eye is gouged out!  I am blind!  It hurts so bad!  I'm hurt, owwwww!!!!",  I thought his eye was gouged out also.  I pried his hand away, and found that he was OK, eye intact, just a little red.
Then on Monday, he was hit in the nose with a golf club by another brother.  (Both injuries were accidents.)  And I thought he broke his nose and needed stitches.  Because he yelled at the top of his lungs, "My NOSE, my NOSE, it's broken, I'm gushing blood, my NOSE, I can't breathe, I broke my NOSE. HELP!!!!"

And I thought we were heading off to the ER and instead I found a little cut and it must have hurt but for goodness sakes alive child, are you trying to kill me with adrenaline overload?

I told him just to call out that he was injured and save his diagnosis for the experts (that would be me.)

Here is Jeff and Patrick (the golf club swinger) acting out how to avoid golf club injuries:

The cicadas are out and making more noise then ever, and I LOVE that sound of summer.  I know many of my friends do not-it signifies the middle of summer, or closer to back to school time.  I love summer, you know that, but I also love back to school time. I love the sound the cicadas make in the evening-my favorite time of the day.  I love the warmth and smell of August, when some of the little leaves start to dry up and fall, and the grass gets crinkly.

  2. I swear boys risk their lives on purpose at least 12 times a day right from the very start. Mine are doing it right now while I am coping the only way I know how... looking in the other direction!

  5. Thanks for the laugh!! My kids were asking what they could do today. I think I'll tell them to shave the dog, and then knit a purse. That ought to keep them busy! :)

  7. I just love your blog and your view of motherhood so much. I don't know if you do question and answer anymore, but I had a question for you if you have a moment sometime. With 6 kids and all the things you do, I am sure you get comments like, "How do you do it? I could never do that! I can barely handle my TWO!" or "You are Superwoman!" or "You're amazing!" Well, how do you respond to that? I am pregnant with #6 now (my oldest is only 7!) and we just announced it and sure enough the comments come rolling in and I don't know what to say. I should just take them as compliments, but I'm really kind of embarrassed about it because I am not superwoman or anything like that- you should see the state of my house- but I never know what to say! And then someone yesterday told me that I actually make them feel BAD- like they are not having enough children, they are not doing enough, that they are being selfish cause they have two kids and want to be done then they look at me and feel bad about it. I know I shouldn't care what people think, but 6 kids elicits a lot of different reactions and I try not to let people make me feeling guilty or embarrassed or CRAZY (well it's a little crazy, maybe :) ) but that comment yesterday has been bugging me. Basically, I just wondered how you deal with having a large family and people judging you or comparing themselves to you? Okay that probably made no sense- I am rambling, SORRY!!!!!!

  10. Sweet post! I love that your boy is baking cookies. That is one life skill that I want all of my kids to have. It's important!

  11. We have experienced a few of those "drowned rat" haircuts on our pups before! My girls are always mortified I would do something like that to the poor souls (like i was the one in charge of the clippers). I remember my brother getting a knick on nose when we were younger...he bled like a stuffed pig, I thought I would find his nose missing once I got him cleaned up! College students become quite the cooks when they get hungry!! LOL

  13. :) Thank you for the giggles I just had! Also I LOVE your yard, ours over here in Australia is very similar. As my husband has gotten a job on a farm with a house supplied we are moving (and we have bought a property ourselves to build on one day)and I am struggling with the idea of selling as we have this beautiful Oasis right in our backyard (and a pool) I am not looking forward to this summer without them :( Life goes on though and the property we are moving to has beautiful features of its own, I must remind myself!

  14. I loved this whole post. Made me laugh so hard. Especially the fruit salad. Sounds so much like my son. And the dog hair purse is so gross. scary to think that there are people walking around with those.

  15. I once met a Aussie tourist in England who saved all his dogs fur for his Grandmother to spin and knit him a jumper. I can only assume his dog was bigger than yours :)

  16. Thankyou, I really needed this today:) Still laughing while I type. It sounds like my summer of boys, minor injuries and questions has been similar. I thought for sure my brain would pop if another question came my way today. As for the dog...to funny, and yes the hair will grow back:)

  17. I liked Patrick's comment about the fruit salad :) My son loves every fruit known to man...except cantaloupe. Not a fan of sweet potatoes or carrots either--makes me feel a little bad for all the pureed orange foods we made him eat as a baby!

  18. Your post was like a comedy of errors! I love the way you write; it makes me feel like I was right there! I actually think Sammy is really cute. I remember when you first got him you actually liked him! Then over the years he somehow fell from grace. Poor Sammy! Lol. I'm with Patrick on the "orange fruit" not being so great. Cantaloupe and honeydew are both at the bottom of the fruit totam pole in my opinion. Andrew's injury drama made me laugh so hard! When I was in third grade my hamster bit my nose and I seriously thought she had bit it clean off. Tons of blood and boy did it hurt. Ended up being two tiny tooth holes. I'm sure my mom thought I was dying from all the shrieking I was doing though! One last comment: as ALWAYS your yard is to die for!!! I really am quite envious of it. Thanks for the fun post today! :D

  21. Hey
    You were talking about questions
I know what it's like being a teacher of 30 5/6 year olds
Have you heard of 'brain, buddy, boss'?
When the children have a question, I ask them to use this
First they use their brain- can they figure it out themselves?
Next they ask their buddy- friend/ brother/ sister
Then if they still need to ask
    Go to the boss- you!

  23. So funny and so relateable! I'm going to remember that phrase "sakes alive, are you trying to kill me with adrenaline overload!?"

  24. I saw a photo of Janey in that exersaucer several posts back and immediately started singing, "red, yellow and BLUUUU-UUUEEE" and almost wrote a comment to ask if that iguana (is that what is is?) drives you as nuts as it drives me. Then I see in this post that the creature is missing. I guess the question is answered! I usually just turn it off but I know the time will come when my little guy figures out how to turn it on. Then our exersaucer will look like yours! Love the blog!

  29. Hey I am the one who left the rambling question above about what to do when people with fewer kids than me ask me how I do it... well this post was going around facebook and it is exactly what I was looking for! http://www.shortstopblog.com/2013/08/to-moms-of-one-or-two-children.html. You should check it out it is wonderful!

  30. We just moved from the west coast to the east coast and I couldn't believe the sound of the cicadas when we got out of the car! I'm getting used to it now so I don't notice it as much. The fireflies, too, are a new thing to me.
