Silhouettes

I have always wanted to have silhouettes of the children, and once even entertained the idea of making them myself.  I wanted them to be perfect though, so quickly decided that my lack of patience, time and cutting and pasting skills wasn't going to reach anywhere near perfection.

I wanted simple and classic and quality.  I found this shop on Etsy.

I made the kids line up after school and snapped some photos of their profiles and sent them off.

Here is a tip:  Get them sideways and then ask them to turn their head a little towards you...you want to see a little bit of the eyelashes on the opposite eye if possible.  And also get their shoulders in that photo!

When I received the package in the mail a week or two later I was so nervous.  Would I like them?

I LOVE them. They are perfect.  And I mean perfect.  The paper is top quality, they are cut so accurately, they are mounted beautifully on thick water color paper.  (No one is paying me to say this just so you know!)

(There is a better picture of my line-up in the Etsy shop.)

And now I just have to decide on frames, matting, and where they will hang.  Hopefully that will just take me weeks, not years.

  4. I love silhouettes! When we were in elementary school (for some reason?) they did them at school. My Mom has huge ones of us, seriously like 11X14 size. And the funny thing is my MIL has them of my husband and his two brothers as well. We went to different schools but in the same county, maybe a county-wide thing. hahahaha I think it was in Kindergarten. But nonetheless, they are priceless and I love them!! You will never regret having it done.

  5. They look fantastic! That is one thing I did splurge on when our girls were younger. A very well known silhouette artist from Savannah was in town doing them at a local store and I made sure to take advantage of it. I still treasure them and have them displayed in our home.

  6. They are BEAUTIFUL! I have always wanted to do these with my children as well and can't wait to check out that Etsy shop. Good luck finding the perfect framing materials. I can imagine how long my own search would take!

  7. Beautiful! My mom had them made for all of us kids. There is a woman in MI who does it by hand on the spot. Can't wait until she is in my area to get my 2 year olds done..then we'll have a complete set. Love them!

  14. Sarah, I had Lori make some for me last year and I still love them. Mine are hanging in my dining room (black table and chairs, too) and everyone new always comments on them. Enjoy.

  15. Those are amazing! I have never commented before but have been following your blog for a long time now...I have been meaning to tell you that your Apple Pie recipe from your food blog has been the only one I have used for the last few years and we always love it. We just made our first apple pie of the season last weekend and it was delicious! ~Erin

  16. I love them. I have some of my kids too. I actually came across a lady who does hers by sight. She came to my daughter's preschool and I had her make some for my two kids then. She just looks at your child and cuts with teeny tiny scissors right before your eyes. SHe is in her eighties. She is an absolute doll. I called her after #3 was born and she just had me go to her tiny house full of cats and she made his on her patio. Now that we have #4, I am hoping she will let me do the same. I loved the whole experience, she just chats and cuts and tells the most amazing stories. I swear their silhouettes would be one of the only "things" I would grab in a disaster. I have mine in basic black frames, love em.

  20. I think I now have the *perfect* idea for my mother-in-law for Christmas (the same week as her birthday, so we need 2 gifts for the woman who really needs nothing, but loves her grandkids dearly.)
