A Regatta

Abbey's fall crew season is over.  I was only able to attend two regattas-boy are those long days!-but I have to say, as much as I feared the busy-ness of nightly practices, and the travel (thank goodness for my sister-in-law who helped us out tremendously), I love the sport.  It takes so much concentration and discipline and team work, (which means patience and tolerance), but also brute strength.

boat unloading early in the morning---and I'm talking early....6 a.m.  we had to leave at 3 a.m. to get there in time

  1. Try it out! They have a learn to row program every summer, it's usually mostly the parents of the rowers :)

  4. Good for Abby for sticking with it. I know I've mentioned before that a friend of ours daughter is rowing at Alabama. It is really hard work, and long hours. But, once you are out there...the scenery is just beautiful!

  7. What a great sport to be involved in. My favorite picture is of the girls lifting the boat out of the water and you can see all the leaves, like a mosaic, in the shallow water. Colorful leaves--something I don't get to see in my part of the country. Enjoy those colors and fallish weather for me!

  8. My daugher rowed crew and ran cross country as well. Both are such beautiful sports. Gliding across the water and running through the woods - she made it look so easy!

  9. My cousins all row up in Scotland and are very good at it. I know it's hard work so well done to Abbey for sticking with it!

  10. I love that your kids climb trees. That's what childhood is all about.

  12. Wow! It does look like hard work! She's such a cutie in her boots and headband. You must be so proud! We don't have sports like that here in AZ. Guess there's not enough water here in the desert? ;) I know about the long days though. My girls are in the Nutcracker and rehearsal starts at 7 am tomorrow and ends at 4. Ugh....

  13. Crew was my favorite sport, and I got in the best shape of my life. It looks like it's all arms, but your legs are the real key. But, even if you aren't super competitive, it's a terrific way to spend an hour. My dad rows a skull (a single) and my mom has been in doubles, quads and eights. Go for it.

  18. Crew seems like such a great opportunity for Abbey, 3 a.m. departures and all. Maybe this is beside the point, but I couldn't help but thinking as I read this how incredibly invaluable team sports are for teen girls. Learning to be a part (and not just the star) of a show. Learning to stop talking and just do your job. Learning to build your teammates so that the whole team is better. Learning to build your strength and not just for aesthetic's sake (which is what will plague a woman for the rest of her life.)
