Ordinary Days

I made the grossest meal one night.  I just had to tell you that.  I made bagel pizzas for back-up and I have no picture of those because they were all gone.  I hate when I spend time making a meal and no one likes it, but this time I knew when I was putting it together that it wasn't going to be good, and I forewarned everyone.  I have no idea why I went ahead with the recipe in the first place, it was like I was on auto-pilot while in my head I kept thinking, "This can NOT possibly taste good."  And it didn't.

We ordered 4 new Little Critters and someone was overjoyed when the UPS man rang the doorbell.

The best purchase I ever made, still.  It will be one year this month, and it has been used every day possible.

Hydrangeas in my back yard.  Not as luscious as the Cape's but I'll take what I can get.

Abbey's homework, no kidding.

We have two new additions, one already bit the dust.

I've been making bagels like a crazy woman.  Matt says to pack an extra one in his lunch bag because he has a little bagel side business going.  I have yet to see any profits in my pocket.  I think they are being spent on ice cream sandwiches.

I have a real hard time spending $40 on dog grooming. He also hates going to the grooming place and I really do feel bad when I take him there-another reason not to shell out the cash.  But Sammy was in desperate need and I just HATE cutting his nails more than anything else on earth. When I picked him up the groomer said, "He was my best dog by far today." And that made me feel proud, which in turn made me laugh at myself, because TRUST ME, I have done NOTHING to make him either good or bad, he was born that way.  Can't you tell he is proud in the After photo?  Why am I even talking about my dog?  For God's sake alive, what have I become?

Lunches lined up at night.  Abbey insisted on that lunch box even though I said, "If seniors make fun of you at school and point and laugh and push you down I am still making you carry it."  She said she would. and instead of getting made fun of she gets compliments on how cute it is.  Well, what do I know anyways?

A beautiful pink-cloud morning.

Natcher=Nature

Speaking of natcher, we had rain for 5 minutes the other day.  Still dry as a bone over here, but I shouldn't complain because I know others have had more than their fill.

  1. Natcher = fantastic.

We had rain here recently and all the Californians paused in admiration. It's been months. Thunder makes them scream and lightning causes children to point to the sky in horror. I kid you not. I was shocked to watch it last fall when we arrived from the Midwest.

  2. Sarah! I could not stop laughing through this entire post. My husband kept looking at me saying, "What? What's so funny?" I love your humor. From the crappy waste of time meal to the 2 fish. We just "won" two at the fair. No one wins those games and we won two! One didn't make it through the night, the other only lasted a week. Anyway, speaking of natcher ...

  3. I just have to say that I love your "ordinary days". Through thick and thin, I love being a wife and a mom and I can tell that you do too.

By the way, we love the Little Critter books over here too. They're awesome.

So sorry your daughter has that much homework. That's just insane. Hopefully it will pay off in the end. Hopefully :)

  4. ordinary days are my favorite. I freak out when something is out of our ordinary. Which is why I'm freaking about our new puppy...arriving in just over a week. Crap. What have I done? Griffy loves all the little critter books too :) sorry about the dinner! the bagels sure look good though!

  5. Gotta love ordinary days! I had a smile on my face reading your entire post! My daughter's a senior and her bf was teasing her that she was the only one still drinking a juice box! Well, now that we've bought apple juice ones...he, as a junior is hooked! LOL And, how precious is Natcher? I love children's early writings.

  7. Little Critter! Love those books. We have some Little Critter play-along books for the computer that my preschoolers loved. Each page has these fun little animated surprises the kids can click on.

The dog cracks me up. I can't cut our dogs nails, either. Tell me why I can draw blood and run feeding tubes, but I can't cut a dog's nails? We went on a family bike ride on Labor Day, and my husband convinced me it was a good idea to take the dog along....in the toddler bike trailer....I looked like such a fool. It would be one thing if he was a cute little fluffy dog, but he is a hunting dog. When did I become the woman with a dog in a stroller? It is for sure a sign that I should have more babies.

  8. yum, I may have to make bagels today! My youngest loves little critter too, but I swear he likes to look at the back flap at all the tiny pictures of all the Little Critter books just as much as reading the books themselves! He tells me which ones we've read, which ones we own vs the ones from the library. The newer ones don't have that backflap with the pictures - he is not too happy about that!

love the lunchbox! and would love to hear what you pack, since you've shared the daily to do notebook and the budget book.

also would be interested in how you do your meal prep to avoid the witching hour - I am in desparate need for that trick!

  9. That meal actually looks like a meal my husband loves (that he grew up with!) I haven't made it in ages. We call it "macaroni and beef." I think the sauce starts with tomato juice.

Love your ordinary time photos - esp. Little Critter. Those books are the best!

  12. Nature note--best pic ever!! I agree with him--Dear God thank you for everything. Written in careful handwriting like that gives us grown ups a bit of perspective. Give my thanks to the author, and thanks for sharing, made my day a lot brighter.

  17. Cute post! I too have made mystery casseroles that the family rejected. They were not lucky enough to have a backup plan though, you're such a nice mom! I made your sliders on the rhode dinner rolls last night, yum! Gotta try the bagels one of these days. Patrick is too cute as always!

  18. A year later, I'm wondering, do you remind him everyday that YOU made the best decision of the year with that purchase despite the fuss?

    I know I would :)

  20. I love how you keep your blog real. So much so that you share your failed dinner attempts. I have done the very same thing...continued making something I rather knew would be a flop! Oh well....live and learn!

    Great post!

  22. You blog about Sammy because he's part of your family, and you love him. Your readers love him too, I'm sure, I know I do! I just wish I looked that good after paying $40 to be "groomed." Oh, well. Great post, Sarah! Thank God for ordinary days!

  23. I have that pan and I think I made that gross casserole once. I forgot the back up bagel pizzas though, good tip :)

  26. Wow, can not believe Abby's homework pile! My girls started kindy today and I was relieved that there was no homework in their backpacks today. I'll enjoy it while I can.

Also, wanted to say thank you for linking to my Raggedy Ann dress in your sidebar under "Sweetest Little Girl Dress Ever" I am so honored! Our hits have gone threw the roof on that one dress and I just figured out that it was because of your blog. Thank you! I have been a reader of your blog for what feels like forever so it was an extra special treat to see it on your side bar. :)

  27. I had no idea you had a dog! I don't know why that surprised me so much??

My husband was reading over my shoulder and saw the dinner picture and said "yum, what's that??" Apparently you can send your dinner rejects to our house.

Poor Abbey, those days seem like yesterday. Time flies . . . speaking of which, wynn is 18 months in a couple of days-how is that possible? And when did Patrick get so big?

  30. Before I read anything on your blog, I looked at that picture of the macaroni and thought, hmm. I made something that looked just like that.
Then I read your post, laughed, and remembered that mine was disgusting too.

  31. What IS the recipe for that disgusting dish? Then we'll know what to stay away from....
