A New Routine

The kids first day of school was yesterday.  Isaac started last week since he's in high school...I forgot to take his 'First Day' picture.  (I'm sure he's devastated by my forgetfulness. :)
Look at all the cute kids peering out the windows.  (Abbey is saying..."mom, please, c'mon!" while she's walking away.)

And just like last year, Patrick was devastated.  This year, though, it has less to do with missing everyone, I think, than it has to do with getting to RIDE on that big bus.
I'm sure he imagines them going to some huge water park where free candy and tons of gum is given out.  Also all you can eat french fries with loads of ketchup for dipping.

Heart breaking.

  6. I agree one room a day. That is all I can handle. I have been doing the big Fall cleaning project for about a week now. Trying to get the whole house done by September 1st. Good luck to you.

  7. Looks like a great day! My Timothy still cries when his sisters go to school but in 2 weeks he starts the preschool they are opening there. Oh the joy!
What's with the bus and Catholic school?! We certainly don't have that but after I told you about walking my kids to school yesterday, I relly don't need it!
    Have a great day!

  8. Hey Sarah, happy first day to everyone. I had the overwhelming urge to come home from school drop off on the first day and throw everything away :) Patrick has that pouty lip down really well.

I went to Catholic school and rode a school bus too :)

  10. Man - i feel ya. I have a pile of laundry on the dining room table and my living room is torn apart for a paint project - i have serious putting back together to do today while they're in jail, i mean school.

  12. Honestly... the fact that you owned up to not playing with son (for too long) and carried on with the household chores, makes you a goddess in my eyes... I feel so guilty when I do this, and think I must be the only mum in the world that is so mean... thank you for your honesty! Lx

  13. What a cutie-pie! And I love all of those songs on your iPod, I have that whole CD as well. Music always helps motivate me.

  14. Happy back to school week! Poor little Patrick! There's just something about school buses. When my little sister first started going to kindergarten, she decided that she wanted to be a bus monitor when she grew up. She thought it was the most glamorous job ever because you got to be in charge and ride the school bus everyday. A double wammy.

I really like your one room a day approach. It's a bit inspiring. I always write out this huge, unreasonable list of things to accomplish in the morning. I usually don't make it through half of it and then feel like a huge slacker. I'll work on that.

I would have napped too! You are a strong willed woman!

  15. I absolutely love those pictures of Patrick! What a sad face! My little one (almost two) handled seeing her brothers go off to school pretty well. I was surprised! Maybe she likes having everything to herself:)

I need to purge too, unfortunately I've caught some kind of gastrointestinal virus (I'll spare you the gory details) and I've been feeling pretty crappy the past few days. I'm hoping today I'll be on the upswing.

I'm going to do the one room a day thing too - what a great idea!

  17. Happy First Day of School! We started back TWO weeks ago which meant back to work for me..... literally WORK! Oh, the life of a school nurse! Anyhoo, I have a 7th grader and she totally let me take her picture this year because this year they can wear "light" makeup..... little powder, little blush, little lipgloss and she was good to go! Oh, and can you stop by my house and clean while I'm at work? Thanks!

  18. Oh the sad face on Patrick :( And now, I'm off to purge the playroom :) My little guy is still 1/2 day Kindergarten....so I have 2 1/2 hrs to throw stuff away :) Yipppppppppppeeeeeeeee!!!!!

  19. Seriously.. this was like reading my life story. I too, am alone with a little one (2 1/2) while the other kids are off to school. And, the little one was sad, and required a ton of mom's time. I need to clean my boys room, even though, I already did it a few weeks ago. Ugh. Boys. Now we're working on potty training, which requires me to be on top of him 24 hours a day. We're using the three day method, and on day five. LOL. Ahhh.. the life of a mom. Hope you get some more cleaning done! Doesn't it feel good when you do though?!? And, the best part is, there is no one around (except little guy) to mess it up again!

  20. I'm on the one room a day plan too. Yesterday was the living room...ugh what a mess. Today I'm still debating on what to tackle..probably the library. Books everywhere and it's a beautiful day outside!

  22. Patrick's little face just killed me!!! What a cutie!!! I certainly wish I could stay home with my 3yr old. I love the picture of him eating a nice little lunch and then cozied up for a nap. I do the "pretend stay at home mom" gig on the weekends and feeding my son is one of my favorite parts. Weird, but it is. You are doing a wonderful job!

  23. I love how Patrick covers his face with his hands when he gets upset... Max does the same thing. Always makes my heart melt!

  24. I think that casserole will be tomorrow night's meal.
So cute when Patrick covered his face. Poor guy.
Least he's in big boy underwear!

  25. I plan on some down deep and dirty cleaning when my 3 kids head off to school next week -- that is when I am done boo-hooing over my baby's first day of kindergarten. :(
On a happier note -- your dinner looks AWESOME. I hopehopehope you can just tell me what you consider "chili beans" in your recipe. Do you use kidney beans? I would really like to try this out -- looks like something my family would love.
ps: Poor Patrick. Sounds like he had a lot of special time with you all to himself. I'll bet he'll be waiting at the door for everyone to get off the bus though!

  26. Little Patrick was just like my little Charlie when his big bro went off for his half days this year! Also---WHAT is that game Patrick was playing with? Pardon my ignorance, but I haven't seen it? Looks like connect four, but not. I think that would keep Charlie very interested for a while. . .

  30. One room a day is my plan too. I keep putting it off...that isn't going to help me one bit. Thanks for the motivation, I really love your blog and cleaning posts, they really inspire to get to work!

  31. Awwww that face!!! He is such a cutie! I'm looking forward to the first full day of school around here so I can clean something and it actually STAYS clean for more than 2 minutes. ;)

  33. SARAH!!! That picture of Patrick with his hands over his face made me CRY! I totally wasn't expecting it, and I must be PMSing or something. I'm glad you followed it with happy cuteness and some motivation to get off my tush and clean!

  34. My youngest little guy was so sad when our oldest two went to school last year, but this year....NO WAY!!!!! I'm thinking he likes being home alone with his mama. I had a crazy cleaning spree this past Thursday and Friday...I'm pretty sure I need to go through the house again tomorrow to reassure myself that it can STAY clean and picked up. :)
I LOVE having dinner ready and prepared too, such a good feeling!

  35. Your little Patrick is so stinkin' cute! Love your blog!

  36. Those pictures of Patrick crying about broke my heart! Does he know how completely adorable he is? He must.

I'm so happy for you that you have your routine back! Ellie starts school Monday and I CAN'T WAIT. I'm craving a schedule right now like nobody's business. And your one room a day plan sounds perfect!

  37. Awww poor little guy!! Those photos are just precious! Soon enough he'll be on that big yellow bus! I remember my youngest being so excited to ride the bus.

I just love your header, that is so cute!!

  38. It is just so hard to understand why you can't go along on all of the "older kid" stuff! I said "awwwww" out loud when I saw those pics.

One room per day is so reasonable and I LOVE it!
Thanks for showing a real day...not a superwoman, unattainable day :)

  39. What is it about school starting that spurs us into deep cleaning? And...I don't even have any kids at home anymore and I still feel like I need to do it now that the GRANDKIDS are going back. Maybe that is how the tradition of Fall cleaning really got started...people purging their houses of the kids summer stuff and stink?

That's a really good way to do it-a room a day. I used to do that too (sometimes) when i wasn't been a total freak about having to do everything in one fell swoop.

The best part of your day? That you took a few moments to play with that darling little guy. He is just precious and beautiful. Diana

  40. Those pictures of your son were so cute...poor thing. Great explanation of how he probably felt...so true. Love the documentation of your day. I'm going to clean tomorrow while the kids are in school. For some reason this posts inspires me and tells me make sure you do just that. Take care.

  41. Gosh, you inspire me. You REALLY do.
