Ordinary Days

We have had such beautiful weather and there is much more to come I am told. It is wonderful to have any early spring!  This is what living in the South must feel like?  We've had two terribly difficult winters, so I feel like we deserve it a little.

Whole 60 over, Whole 90 going strong.

A new salad. It's DELICIOUS. (I left out the mayo.)

Janey helped me "open" our porch.

A gift from a friend-they are beautiful!

Andrew's team won the championship game! So happy for them as they worked so hard and are such a nice sweet young group of boys.

Matt showing me that core strength in teens comes naturally? Not in 47 year olds.

Janey and I made these for Abbey's weekend home. Yes I made them without licking my fingers, or the bowl, or eating 12 cookies like I usually would.  It was an exercise in self-control. (They are shamrocks, just in case you can't tell in spite of my awesome frosting skills.)

A quiet morning walk, the last goodbye to winter (that is me giving Mother Nature a persuasive suggestion.)

Abbey is taking a film photography course and loving it-she took some pics of the inside of our church, which is gorgeous.

Walk...

Walk...

Spring night walk, 70 degrees!

Our church at night.

I cried. Can't believe it's over. And I heard Poldark is pushed back to fall, darn.

I missed this at the theatre, and was so disappointed that I did. I am re-reading the book, one of my favorite ever, Colm Toibin is a genius writer. And then I watched the trailer quite a few times. And then ordered the DVD from Amazon because I can't wait till it comes out to Redbox. Finally, SOMEONE MAKES A GOOD MOVIE!

  2. I loved Brooklyn the film, except sitting next to two old ladies who were so noisy between popcorn and chatting! Reading the book now.

  4. I am really enjoying your Ordinary Day posts! Just curious on how your family handles the pressure to stay busy playing sports and what kind of schedule you try to stick to? Do you put your kids on travel teams? I am always torn because I like my kids to be active and have something they love and can focus on and to keep them too busy to get in trouble but sports schedules can really over take family time. We just wrapped up basketball for my 13 year old and he had two after school practices a week and one weeknight game plus about 4 tournaments on the weekends. My 10 year old plays hockey and it is way more than that! Would love to hear how you handle it! Thanks for sharing your amazing wisdom and advice with all of us :)

    1. Hi Kendra-Right now Andrew and Patrick play on travel soccer-that is new this year, and I thought we were crazy to do it again, because we are not travel fans. (It is only Andrew's team that really "travels"-a couple tournaments a year.) We will take it year by year, assessing how it works for the family. It is easier now than ever because there is no "baby" here. We've done travel here and there when the older kids were younger and it was stressful. I honestly think the whole shebang is a serious side of crazy and I can go on and on about it, but here I am. CYO (Catholic Youth Organization) is mostly what we play-which is super low key and fun and local. High school is a whole other thing, but I've mostly enjoyed that-whether it's lacrosse, tennis or soccer, crew. I have found that when the kids do sports, it is a serious team effort here-my husband does a lot of it, it takes great organization on my part, and I have to work to keep up a good attitude, because it can wear a mom down quickly. I do the minimum necessary also-I am not the team mom, just the opposite. :) It is NOT our life, and I won't let it be. BUT I've seen the progression from being a junior high thing that wasn't completely necessary trickle down to something that begins in first grade and has evolved into something high school coaches want to see, unfortunately. I ALSO see that it is SO great for high school kids to be involved in a sport-to burn off energy, and stay focused and go to bed tired, etc. That is one of the reasons we do it really, besides the fact that the kids want to. (Just from experience, I think it's important to research the program and see what the coaches are like, and what the team attitude is. No way is it worth it if it's miserable with a yelling coach and kids who don't want to be there or aren't taught good sportsmanship or skills. Let me know if I just rambled or answered your question!

  5. To carry you over until "Poldark", check out "Doc Martin", "Land Girls", "Home Fires", and "Indian Summers". They are all sooo good! And of course, "Call the Midwives" if you haven't watched that yet. "Mercy Street" was good too. I was sad about DA ending but so happy with the ending that it lessened the sting a bit. I haven't loved the last two seasons so I was glad the ending was happy and hopeful!

  6. I'm so impressed with your Whole 30 thing... seriously. You are amazing. Also, we still have about six Downtons left to watch, because they are recorded and we wait to watch them with the couple who lives in our back house. I'm seriously treasuring them b/c once they're gone and watched, it will be so sad!

  9. I am so glad you are writing your blog again. Was your porch part of your new addition?

Your Whole 30 is inspiring...I need to try something like that. At the very least I could certainly cut out the sugar and eat more healthy foods. Have a great week Sarah!
