You’ve read my introductory post on 40 Bags in 40 Days, and broken down your house into forty areas, bought some bags and boxes for donations and garbage and are ready to go and now I’m going to teach you how to purge quickly using the 40 Bags in 40 Days method.
You’ve chosen your first area, and are ready to begin on Ash Wednesday or maybe you’ve already started.
40 Bags in 40 Days™ How to Purge Quickly
Your Mindset Is What Matters
Picture your home clean, organized and uncluttered. Keep this vision in mind while you move from area to area throughout this process.
Remember, this is NOT a sad or stressful process, this is fun and exciting! You are going to have a clean, fresh, organized home by the end of this, you are donating your unused and no longer needed items to someone who might want them, and you are going to end up content with what you have, breaking the materialistic mindset that more is better and creating a lovely home for yourself that you truly appreciate.
There is NO shame involved whatsoever. Clutter piles up in everyone’s home and there are times when our spaces do not take priority because life throws us curve balls. Ask me how I know! :). But I can tell you for sure, clutter is adding to your stress and shame only makes you feel worse. Do not be embarrassed! This is a fun non-stressful opportunity to go step by step through your house in forty days and make the change.
Just BEGIN!!! Procrastination is your worst enemy. Put the phone away, turn on some nice music, and just begin.
Move quickly and calmly, this is not the time to get distracted, and start looking at bathroom organization on Pinterest! Look at the space you have, focus on what is in front of you. Make the best of the space YOU have.
Set Up Your Purging Space
Have with you your vacuum, spray or wipes, your notebook, and bags and/or boxes, and a laundry basket.
We don’t want to run through the house putting things away-we want to STAY IN THE AREA until it is finished, so the laundry basket is going to hold things that belong in other areas. For example, if you find your kitchen scissors that have been missing for years in a bathroom drawer you are going to put those in your laundry basket-later you will distribute those things where they should have been.
I am going to use this little built in cabinet I use for toys and kid’s thing in my hallway as my example.
Take everything out of the area you are going to purge. You can do this little by little, drawer by drawer, or in one room, or a closet. While doing this PURGE! Put your hands on every single thing and ask:
Do you need it?
Do you use it?
Do you love it?
Do you have duplicates?
Do not second guess yourself. Do not spend a ton of time willow-wallowing back and forth.
Seperate what is garbage with what is donation and put them right in those bags.
Wipe the space down, and/or vacuum up.
My thoughts on resale and garage sales: Of course it’s up to you-I rarely resell and have never yet had a garage sale because I want these things OUT of my house, not stored for later unless absolutely necessary. I don’t have time for resale or garage sales. If you have things that you know you will get worthwhile money for (designer clothing, a piece of furniture you don’t want anymore) then put these aside somewhere else RIGHT AWAY after you are finished purging the area-a box in your car, or a space in the garage.
Put It Back and Purge Again
Double purge: You purged once taking things out and now you are going to purge putting things back in. Remember to use that laundry basket if something should not be in that space.
ONLY put back what you use and love. This is the time to go hard core. You have purged the things coming out of the area, now purge them again going back in.
Keep Going Or Clean Up
If you are on a roll go for it and cross some more areas off-you will be buying yourself some time.
If you are still overwhelmed, just begin where you left off. One small area at a time. After you complete the room, you can go back and purge again and again, as you find more things, and get used to the process.
Put the cleaning supplies away and throw the garbage away and put the donation bag right into your car.
Go back and look at that beautiful purged simplified area. You will be motivated to do this again and again and this is what will keep you going.
