Golden Books

I am not the collector type, but I am really tempted to start one with one of my favorite things: Golden Books.

Here are my favorites:

I was thrilled to find A Child’s Year at a little used book shop for .50 cents.  I love Joan Anglund…I remember my mom having her calendars when I was young.

Abbey bought this one for me at an antique store in our little town.

My most favorite of all, Little Mommy.  I had a copy when I was little and wore it out.  When I found a new copy years later I could remember every little detail of every page, I had studied them so hard when I was a little girl.

Funny how this looked like my bedroom for awhile in real life. (But put the baby IN my bed.)

    Yup 🙂

We have all of those and many, many more. LOVE Little Golden books and scour antique stores for them. And I think the fact that you and I both had Little Mommy as girls explains some of the things we have in common now!

I'll have to look for a child's life. I didn't have that one and now you gave me the wants. 🙂

I love little golden books. The kids inherited several of mine and I picked up several reissues when the boy was little. Man are new editions expensive!

I remember the Little Golden Book "We Help Daddy." It shows how two little children help their Dad do all his chores one Saturday. My kids loved it, but it set up such expectations in me for MY husband to be the same kind of Dad, that finally I had to hide it away.
My husband hates chore lists and being reminded about things around the house he needs to do, and he didn't like people "helping" him either.
I think I'd like "Little Mommy!"
Now that the last child is in college and the others are all married…

My mother-in-law saved all of my husband's books (and his sister's) from when they were kids. There were well over 50 Little Golden Books in there. It was pretty awesome. Some we've had to get rid of as they were totally falling apart, still many others are missing their back covers. Most of the old ones have the plastic lining on the front peeling off, but the kids love them.

I think it's interesting to see how content has changed, and the use of specific words, through the years.

I started a collection for my daughter when she was born. Our favorites are The Color Kittens (1949), Chipmunk's ABC (1963) and The Bunny Book (1955). I hope she'll pass them down to her children as well.

I have a Vintage Little Golden Book Collection, but I have never, ever seen that one by Joan Walsh Anglund…so I think that is a TERRIFIC find for you! I treasure these books, and like you, I studied EVERY detail in the pictures. I will pass on the Little Goldens that are Disney, or of cartoon character stories, they don't hold the same sway with me, I can leave them no problem. My favorite finds are from yard sales for ten cents or a quarter. I have been known to buy ten or more dollars worth at a time when they're priced that way! Yours are adorable and I'm now getting grandchildren and cannot wait to share them with yet another generation.
    XOXO

Started grabbing up Golden Books before we had children! My favorite was The Pokey Little Puppy. I remember as a kid going to the back cover and looking at all the different titles and crossing off (only in my mind or my mom would've shot me!) all the names of the books I'd read or really wanted to read. 🙂

Oh my goodness. I love Eloise Wilkin's book, Baby Dear. I would like to find it for my new granddaughter, Clara Rose. Her mother is my youngest daughter, Laura. I read Baby Dear to Laura's older sister, Jennifer, until she had parts memorized. I read a Golden Book about animal sounds to Laura when she was tiny. She would make the animal sounds herself. I would like to find that book also. Sweet memories and beautiful books.

Brings back memories from my childhood! So wonderful!

And I have a question for you (previous post): however, if you choose not to answer it I completely understand. I know lots of readers ask where you live. Obviously, you don't have to share your city, but perhaps just the state you live in (I have perused this blog relentlessly and cant find it!). I would love to know because it is so beautiful where you live. So different than our brown, flat, dry and hot Phoenix, AZ! When I "grow up" (haha) I want to live some place beautiful like you do!

I too love Golden Books! My faves are Dr. Dan and Nurse Nancy. I had my Mom's copies when I was little but they were lost over the years. This year, my Mom found new copies of each and gave them to my children. They love them! I have never seen A Child's Year or Little Mommy but I will start looking for them now that I have found out about them! 🙂

I really think you and I are kindred spirits for so many reasons and "Little Mommy" is just another example. That was my favorite book when I was little and I remember studying each page and acting out the different parts. I had forgotten about it until now, so thank you for helping me remember! I now have to hunt down a copy for my girls!

I adore LGBs. My husband and I have a collection of every title from when they began in the '40's. This includes those with puzzles in the back, those with dust jackets, a bank to slip coins inside and uncut paper dolls! We have over 5000 in our collection. My dad used to read them to me when I was little. My favorite is The Twins illustrated by my favorite LGB illustrator , Eloise Wilkin. Great post!

Anything illustrated by Eloise Wilkin is my favorite though – I wanted a thousand babies who looked like hers.
