Boys With Sticks

Isaac is playing a sport that is new to us this year…surprisingly enough, there are a couple left?

The first time I watched lacrosse I thought, “This is NOT a good idea.”  I said the words ,”Owwww!”, “Oh, no!” and “Are they allowed to do that?”  quite a few times.

See, I had this crazy idea that boys playing with sticks, swinging them in the air, holding them above their heads, and hitting each other with them could only lead to well….

Blood.  Stitches.  Fights.  Nasty head wounds.

Little example of the size difference:

And another:

But he can run fast, and even fly:

Matt started playing also:

And of course, the most skilled player in the entire household (when he can actually see):

oh such a great feeling to be on the sidelines cheering your kids on. I'm not there yet but my mom came to my track meets and took pictures of me and embarrassed the heck out of me with all her screaming, but looking back I'm glad she was there. Great pictures.

Lacrosse is new to me too. I don't know the game at all. But it looks like a fast game and a dangerous one too. Just wait until Isaac hits his growth spurt, then watch out. Loved all the pictures. Involvement in sport is important in our home, it can teach so much. Like how to deek out those big bruisers for instance : ) Good Luck mom and enjoy the rest of the season.

How cool – I have never seen what a game of lacrosse looks like, but I knew all about it as a child because of Enid Blyton. She used to write about lacrosse in all her boarding-school books.
My kids have just started getting old enough to play competitive sports and it's so fun standing on the sidelines and watching them.

Go Patrick!! Love the helmet. He looks like something out of Star Wars. Having 3 boys I do wonder how they'd go with Lacrosse – all those sticks – ouch! How great is Isaac though getting out there with kids that are HUGE. But I bet he's the only player on the team that can fly – what an asset! xx

Oh, now you have me all freaked out! We signed our kids up for sports camp run by a nearby church this summer. We've done this other summers–they do things like cheerleading, flag football, basketball. This year, there wasn't anything my oldest daughter was very interesting during the week I planned to have them at camp. So she settled on lacrosse. For some reason, knowing zero about lacrosse, I thought it was some kind of wussy sport and that she would be fine….um, it looks like rugby with sticks! AAAuuugh! And it's coed camp! Perhaps I should try to talk her into basketball? Or just see how things turn out and hope she keeps her teeth?

I had the same reaction as you when my oldest started playing 3 years ago! In his 1st game as a 6th grader (also MUCH smaller than most), he took a hit under his chin which threw him off his feet and he hit the ground hard. I so badly wanted to run on the field, but my hubby held me back. The hit was illegal of course, but the ref never saw it so play went on uninterrupted. He is so anxious to start high school lacrosse next year. My middle boy started playing in kindergarten – now that's funny to watch!

Both of my boys have played for 3 and 4 years… agreed, I cringe as I watch and still do! You give boys sticks and LET them hit each other?!? What boy wouldn't like it! My boys love it and we are catching on to the game. My girls like it as well and am wondering if that is next! (it is a WHOLE different game for them!) Tell him to stick with it! My oldest is on the high school team now! I just posted about lacrosse last week on my blog! By the way… you did much better capturing the game on film than I do!

Well…maybe now I've found it…the perfect sport for my littlest one. He has never met a stick that he didn't love, want to carry around for hours, and even sleep with at times.
Love that Issac has found a sport he loves and is good at..no matter his size!
    Happy Weekend!

P.S. Oh and thanks so much for your directions on Picasa. So easy and I love my new header. You're a peach! Have a great weekend!

My 11-year old has been playing for a couple of years now – and LOVES it. He thinks it's the coolest thing when he comes home with new bumps and bruises ๐Ÿ™‚ – very proud of his battle scars (as a mother I have to say the bruised rib a few weeks ago was a little troublesome – but he didn't seem to mind).

Lacrosse is HUGE in my town. Too huge if you ask me. They start grooming these kids in 1st grade to play in high school. Stephen (9th grade) could never have walked on to play with out years of experience. Good for Isaac for getting out there…it is fun to watch! And can I just say that my whole family walks around quoting Napoleon Dynamite. I think I know the whole movie by heart.

I think it's great that Lacrosse is gaining in popularity across the country. I can't believe how slow it has been to catch on though. It's so much fun to play. I wanted to play in high school (18 years ago!) but I didn't make the JV team. Too much running due to my asthma. It's huge here on the East Coast and has been for quite some time. It seems every school has boys and girls teams. The girls play a little different – they don't hold their sticks so high and they aren't allowed so much checking. We used to play in gym class. No helmets, no padding, no shin guards. Crazy I know.

With all the imperfections and maintenance it requires, when I pull up and walk in I want to stay, to relax, to feel safe, for daily life to be easy, and to care for "home". I want simplicity, ease, convenience. To me when my home is simple, without being filled to the brim of things that just take up space I love it best. I hope if you've participated fully or even partially as time allowed in 40 Bags in 40 Days you've found that joy and pride in your home. I plan to share more little challenges and tips as the year proceeds to trouble shoot areas and keep maintenance effortless and the house love flowing. Daily life in our homes should bring us joy and ease while we care for our families, we should be thoughtful stewards of our money and of our time and simple living is the answer to that.

When I know what I have and have removed all that I don't, it cultivates more discretion and caution about what I bring back in. I think there is also some realization of how much money is wasted on fads, or thoughtless purchases. It's quite eye-opening. I've become so much more careful, and find we all take better care of things, as do my children.

It's not a hard equation, all it takes is ruthless purging-and not just little things but larger items also. Functional furniture is the key and very few decorative pieces especially when children are in the home, makes life so much easier.

As we head into the last week of the 40 Bags in 40 As we head into the last week of the 40 Bags in 40 Days Challenge I'm hearing from so many of you what a difference it has made in your appreciation of your homes, a certain contentment, and at the same time a thrill of looking in on the organized kitchen, closet and living space. I agree! I love purging, cleaning and organizing a space and then going back later that day just to get that wonderful sense of accomplishment. It makes such a difference!

A lighter, fresher, calmer home is the result of de-cluttering. I even had a participant who had been planning on listing her home, start 40 Days just to get her house ready to sell, and then was so ruthless in the process and also thrilled by the results that they decided to stay put in what seemed like a new home to them. Tips For Shared Kids Rooms- This bedroom has seen Tips For Shared Kids Rooms-
This bedroom has seen every configuration possible. With kids spread out 18 years apart, I've had to be creative over the years-which I think is the key to sharing rooms. It is all possible-I consider it a rare luxury and privilege to not have to share a room although I know that is not the norm today.
๐Ÿƒ
I like to create a simple look with white furniture (this ends up making room transitions easier also when moving someone out and someone else in.) I also like to match bedspreads for a cohesive look.

A simple shared book shelf can hold a child's special books and knick knacks and if necessary can be assigned per shelf.

When my kids were younger I had my dad build me a large wooden roll out box for under each bed. This held each child's toys.

All clothes are kept in a closet instead of dressers to save space.
I feel like I bailed on everyone following 40 Bags I feel like I bailed on everyone following 40 Bags progress and tips. My excuse is the stomach flu ravaging us all here in the last week with me being the last to fall and the slowest to recover. On top of that the weekend before I tried to roller blade (don't even ask how many steps I made it) and majorly bit it. Thankfully I think I just sprained my arm. So I've been using one arm for nursing sick children back to health, and doing whatever cleaning and cooking and straightening I can do. Alas, last week was a wash. We have two weeks to go. I'd like to continue and end on a high note. How about you? Even a little de-cluttering counts! Spring is in the air and I can't wait to throw open my windows and let fresh clean air circulate through my fresh clean orderly home. โ˜€๏ธ๐ŸŒท๐ŸŒฑ

Nothing can replace human interaction and I've found that too many toys has the reverse affect. They cause overwhelm-just like us - we'd rather sit in an orderly space than one filled with too many things to do and too much stuff.
โ˜€๏ธ
When it comes to kids closets here are some tips-
1. Hand me downs don't all have to be received. Or received at all. Be choosy and keep just what they will use and need.
2. When children are presented with too many choices, tension and acrimony can exist. Being able to open a closet with a reasonable amount of outfits can create more peace.
3. Cultivating independence in care of clothes is easier when there is less and the space is simplified and organized.
