10K in the Basement or If the Wii Told You To Jump Off A Bridge, Would You Do It?

Andrew had been calling me, “Mom, I need you!”

Then ten minutes later, “Mom, can you help me?”

I was busy doing last minute, before-bed tasks.

I kept saying, “Just a second! I’ll be there in a minute!”

I knew it was something about the Wii because I had allowed him to play for an hour before bedtime. And I HATE when he calls me when he’s playing the Wii, because I know what he wants…the disc is skipping or he needs help figuring out how to go from one player to two players…and I can’t help because I HAVE NO IDEA how to work that darn thing.

So I ignored him.

Finally, he said, “Please Mom, HELP ME!”

I made it down to the basement and looked at him.

He was dripping with sweat and shuffling along, jogging in place.

A little pale.

“Mom, I’m not getting to the end yet! This thing is going forever…it won’t stop! Something is wrong!”

He had accidentally set it for a 7 mile race, instead of the usual little fun run.

And he was on mile 6.

He just kept plugging along. Maybe thinking his Mii would jump out and slap him silly if he stopped. “You signed on for this, and you are going to see it through! There’s no stopping now! Stop calling for your mommy and get those knees up!”

I laughed so hard I cried. The kids all ran downstairs to see.

We cheered him on as he rounded the bend to finish up.

6o-something minutes.

He asked for a glass of water and we got PJ’s on and I tucked him in bed.

I think he probably slept good?

Sarah, I’ve been following your blog since Gina told me about it. I love it. This running story is adorable. I help coach cross country for the high school; you have scholarship material on your hand! Hope he will run in school.

    OMG-so funny.

My boys figured out that the don’t have to actually run while playing their Wii….all they do is shake their hand(the remote) and the Wii thinks they are running! Geesh. Defeats the whole fitness idea of the game 😉

That. is. awesome. I think you *almost* convinced me to get a Wii… I’m thinking a 7 mile run right before bed might solve our bedtime issues.

Years ago, I wanted to invent a computerized “Baby Track” where the kids chased a toy endlessly, just like a greyhound chases a rabbit at the track. Heartless and cruel, or a great idea for exhausted parents? Glad to see the Wii has done the trick for us. Yours is a very funny story.

What a trooper!! He had to be true to the game, so he kept on running. Loved your story.

Thank you so much for the laugh! I love how I would simply think, "This game is running long, I think I'll stop here" and that thought would NEVER cross a child's mid.

Hello- I'm new to your blog and every morning, during my baby's nap, I've been reading it one month at a time. You've inspired me to change a few things about my own blog and to work on my photography skills. I've linked to some inspiring blogs from yours as well. So thank you.
I just had to comment after this post because it made me laugh out loud! Thanks, for everything. -kacey of vivapierre.blogspot.com
