I can't wait till Sunday-Season Three of Downton Abbey started last week and every episode is just so good. Who got me hooked on this show? I think it was my brother Andrew over in Ireland. I just love it. Abbey watched it with me last week, but when she started asking too many questions I told her, "Abbey you have to be quiet. I'm sorry but this show is the highlight of my entire week!" Which says a lot about my life, I guess. But it's true! I really do have butterflies when I think about Sunday.
It makes me so happy that Downton is getting so much press and has had a record number of viewers.

Anyways, Lady Edith is my favorite...probably because she is the second oldest sister out of three just like I am. I am feeling quite awful for her right now, but she'll come around, I just know it.

The only drawback of Downton is that after I am finished watching it I am convinced that I really really need a chauffeur, a butler, a lady's maid, a cook and a few housekeepers. How an I surviving without all these employees? I have no idea. I feel sorry for myself for a few minutes.
If I had a chauffeur I wouldn't have been late to pick up Patrick at preschool the other day!
If I had a butler I wouldn't have had to bother answer the door and have to politely get rid of the gutter salesman.
If I had a lady's maid, I wouldn't be wearing the same yoga pants and stained t-shirt that I wore yesterday!
If I had a cook, we wouldn't have had boring old hamburgers on paper plates last night!
If I had a housekeeper I wouldn't be stepping on Legos left and right, and there wouldn't be a speck of dust anywhere, and I certainly wouldn't have had to spend an hour unclogging the shower drain in the kid's bath!
And I'd have all the time in the world...to dress up, and eat formal dinners, and shop for beautiful outfits every season.
The only thing that snaps me out of my self-pity is that I just can't quite convince myself that in the end, I could actually like dressing up, eating formal dinners and shopping. Darn!

It's the highlight of my week too. So funny you should write about wanting a maid and all that because I totally feel the same way. It makes me want to be more proper too. And yes I would get tired of all that formality as well. Although I am not sure I would get tired of a maid! I would take that over all the fancy clothes anyday.
ReplyDeleteI love it too but I record it to watch it uninterrupted by myself after everyone has gone to bed. It feels a little like eating desert all by myself, but I tell myself it is not the same thing.
ReplyDeleteI'd take the cook and a maid, everyone else would get underfoot.
Love Downton - I love the very first episode with all those bells ringing and someone ironing a newspaper!! But I just finished watching the first season of Call The Midwife and I liked that even more!!! Now let me go find my laundress...I have two down with the stomach bug and I really need some help with this laundry so I can get some sleep!!
ReplyDeleteDo you know you can watch all of season three today?! For real. It already played in England and someone recorded it... You might feel like cheating, but it's worth it.

Just scroll down to season 3. If that link doesn't work let me know, I found it off a Facebook fan club page. Ha! I sound like a junky... I like Mary best- but I'm an oldest.
I was just about to post this! I gobbled them all down last weekend. The season are just too short! Abby could watch all 3 seasons and catch up wih you:) plus you can watch them over and over.
DeleteI just bought season one on DVD!
ReplyDeleteI started watching Downton b/c of your post last year. :) Great show. "vulgarity is not a substitute for wit." why can't I come up with those comments when it's time to correct them? ;)
ReplyDeleteI am so addicted..I plan on doing a vlog in the coming days.. What an amazing show!
ReplyDeleteJust watching season 2 while on the treadmill. I don't want to get off! I love it.
ReplyDeleteI'm always sad when the episode is over, like staring at the tv as if it just insulted me sad. Poor Edith.
ReplyDeleteI'm a newbie to Downtown Abbey, and I am COMPLETELY hooked! I've been playing catch-up with past episodes and I just told my daughter I have their beautiful accents stuck in my head! Haha.
ReplyDeleteI'm a fan too! The hub also loves it and was actually the one reminding me about the upcoming episode haha! I love all the sisters, but my favorite is the grandmother. Oh no, what does that say about me?! :)
ReplyDeleteWe just love it here, too! It's a feast for the eyes and the relationships are just so much fun. Poor Edith...I'm rooting for her!
ReplyDeleteTotal fan, here. So is my husband, which is saying a lot.
ReplyDeleteI wish that I could remain as utterly composed in all situations as Cora does!
I LOVE Downton Abbey. I have to make sure no one is around to bug me when I watch it. The rest of the family knows to leave me alone during my Downton time :).
ReplyDeleteI too love Downton, but I have to admit that as much as I would love to have been one of the "Ladies" I probably would have been Mrs. Padmore. LOL
ReplyDeleteI DVR it and then watch it the next day when everyone has went off to school and work.
Ha! We are headed to a very formal wedding this weekend in Charelston, SC and the discussion has been whether dark suit or black tie is appropriate. Week before last's episode over the men's dress standards has been our go to jokes of the week. Told my husband he doesn't want to show up looking like the waiter :)
ReplyDeleteLady Edith is my favorite also - I wrote a post about it today too :-)
ReplyDeleteI think she is the most interesting and I love how the smallest bit of attention changes her whole demeaner. And, how the lack of attention makes her act out. I think the changing roles for women, after the war will be good for her.
I am so relieved to hear that you do in fact have suppers that consist of "boring hamburgers." I was feeling lazy last week and so we just did macaroni (from a box) and plain hotdogs and I actually thought to myself...."I bet that nice Clover Lane lady never fixes this kind of meal and she has way more kids than me." So it's just nice to know that you have those days too. :) I love your blog!

ReplyDeleteJust wait...the rest of the season will leave you in tears! There's 2 very SHOCKING events that happen. I'm a Downton Abbey addict through and through! :)
ReplyDeleteIsn't it interesting that people tend to identify with the upper class characters? I'm British and my great-grandmother moved miles away from her family because she wanted to work outside on a farm rather than being a housemaid. Seems so strange that those were her two options! So after I've watched it, I tend to think of myself as one of the maids - but even then I think how great it would be to ONLY have to dress and look after one of the ladies, instead of looking after everyone AND being the cook, cleaner, chaffeur, decision-maker of the household, etc like I am now! :)
ReplyDeleteMy Sunday night obsession makes my happy list every week! I enjoy your blog so much. Thanks for inspiring me in so many ways.
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love this show!!! I hope to be able to channel my inner Violet one day (when I'm as old as she is anyway). :-)
ReplyDeleteIt's the highlight of my week too and I feel absolutely bereft when the show ends each week. I like the comment above about staring at the TV like it just insulted you when the show's over! LOL
ReplyDeleteI'm the oldest (and only) daughter in my family, but I like Sybil best because she's political and rebellious and doesn't mind living simply with the love of her life. I also like Daisy because of her spunk and always trying to rebel. Both are so cute!
Parenthood on Tuesday is the other highlight of my week. With a son on the autism spectrum, I can relate to Adam and Cristina Braverman SO much!
And shhhh!!! People who give even teeny spoilers--you should remove those comments please! I don't want to know!
Sarah! And here I **just** posted on my blog that I never read or hear anyone saying they like Edith! She's definitely my favorite of the sisters .... I feel so very bad for her. I was crying during the episode!
ReplyDeleteLoooove this show, but no spoilers...I have to wait until it hits netflix or dvd!
ReplyDeleteIt has the opposite effect on me, though...I find myself wanting to be a maid or a cook instead...not that I love cleaning, but I'm just fascinated with their lives!
I love it, too!
ReplyDeleteIt's the highlight of my week too. I love everything about it. It's just so....beautiful. Have you ever read Kate Morton's House at Riverton? This show made that book come to life for me. It was a win-win. Favorite book and favorite show. Hope you have a great week!
ReplyDeleteI am currently living locked inside the Downton fantasy too! I got series 1 for Christmas and my hub had to make a mad dash out to pick up series 2 for us the other night.
ReplyDeletebig fan
ReplyDeleteI love this show too. :) I just started watching season 1 on Netflix.
ReplyDeleteOh I LOVE Downton! and so does my husband! I love the grandmother, she just says the funniest things :)
ReplyDeletei literally gasped when i saw mary's wedding dress. how dreamy?!!
ReplyDeleteIt's such an amazing show. I feel the same way. Captivating. How are we getting by without all the "help"?
ReplyDeleteI love Downton Abbey also. I have the alarm set on my phone so I don't forget it (as if I would). Our whole family loves it. We, too, have to watch quietly for fear we'll miss great lines, or Violet's wit. And I have you, Sarah, to thank for making me aware of this gem of a show. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite quote is from season one when The grandmother...the Dowager saids' "What is a weekend?"
ReplyDeleteOh I am so excited it is back! We are watching it on Amazon and just saw the first one a couple nights ago - the wedding. I love how the fashions are simple and classy but with gorgeous materials. I couldn't help but think how elegant her gown was compared to most of today's dresses. Sigh... :) And I love that it's one of the few shows my husband and I BOTH enjoy!
