Ordinary Days

I positioned her changing table right next to the window so she can look at the trees-so far her favorite thing to do (besides eat of course).

I have been watching cooking shows on TV when I nurse sometimes, and bought a few cook books but I don't know why I am torturing myself with all that, because throwing a chicken on the table with some macaroni cheese is all I've had time for lately.  The planning, shopping, cooking thing with a newborn and four other kids at home isn't really realistic right now.

This is Andrew trying his hardest at cross country.  I am SO proud of him.  He said afterwards, "Mom I know you probably think I looked like I was going to cry, but that's just the face I make when I try really hard."

I am putting these little kimono shirts on her as long as I am able.  She is so sweet.  Even when she is fussy.  Which has been a lot lately.

He was supposed to be getting ready for bed.

Homework.  I am so happy that Abbey is taking an art class.

  1. Gotta say I love the underwear boy. Too funny. I just subscribed to emeals. With both boys in sports and me making dietary changes for my health, I was feeling like I was flying by the seat of my pants. I needed a plan. So far, so good.

  3. oh, that underwear picture of your son made me totally laugh! I have a 9 year old who seems to get distracted by the craziest things right when it's time to get ready for bed. And your sweet baby pictures make me ache for a newborn. (not happening, though! I'm holding out for grandbabies.) Thanks for the sweet thoughts and pictures you always share. Love your blog! <3

Oh, fussy babies are so tough - I'm glad you have lots of hands to help hold her!

  7. Aww Janey is so sweet. Were any of your other babies so light complected as babies? She is beautiful.

So I have to ask if you have seen the new show "Call the Midwife" on PBS. It is based on that book "The Midwife" that you have recommended on your blog, and it is wonderful. :)

  10. Janey is so precious :). Do you gobble her up a lot? She looks like she was made to be gobbled. I know I'm weird.
LOVE the underwear pic! Thank you for sharing.
Abbey did an amazing job with that leaf. Anything I attempted would look like a red blob lol.
I love how you dress Janey in mostly white and sometimes a touch of pink. It just seems so right for a newborn :).
Have a good day, Sarah. Praying for Janey to grow out of her fussy stage.

  12. Ha...too me a second too...I too thought he was testing out his mummy costume! LOL Glad to see Abbey is taking art. I am trying to get Katie to take an Art class for an elective now that she is in college. She had no time for it while doing I.B.

YAY for art class :) I was a math/science-girl, but always found room in my schedule for art, every semester.

  15. Love reading your blog. Love that you don't pretend to be perfect. It's so easy to give that impression on the internet. Parenting question--which one of your children has the strongest will? How do you handle him (or her)?

  16. Love the underwear photo. Reminds me of my 8 year old who puts his spiderman underwear on his head as a make-shift mask. Gotta love the imagination. We are loving our first year doing cross country. It gives them such a feeling of accomplishment. Good for him!

  17. Golly, your kids are so beautiful. I don't say that to people either... but, yours really are beautiful. Janey looks a lot like you, I think. :)

  18. I laughed out loud about the underwear bit! Too funny! Janey is precious. My baby turned 1 last month and call me crazy but I want another. Of course, I want another girl to even off my 2 boys and 1 girl. But, since nothing is guaranteed I'll patiently wait for my nephew to arrive- only 2 more months to go. ;)

  21. With newborns I have always gravitated towards the seats by the window and my rocking chair always gets relocated to the window side. I don't know if it's the natural light or the promise of an outside world that calms me. Maybe Janey knows she needs those things while she's working through whatever it is that her body is growing out of right now.

  23. I appreciate your blog and the underwear picture moved me to actually make a comment. What better way to sum up the absolute delight and absurdity of motherhood?

Yesterday I found myself saying at the petting zoo, "Milo, no! Don't sit on the goat!"

  27. This is random, but can you tell me about your wood floors? Are they hardwood or 'fake' wood? How do they hold up against kids, dirt, etc? And do you know what color they are (oak, maple, cherry, etc)?? Thanks!! I love reading your blog, it always feels so calm, even though there is a lot of hustle and bustle at your house. :)

  28. I have an easy roasted chicken that you don't have to buy from the store. It's a whole (5 lb. )chicken, with a rub of: 4 t salt, 2 t paprika, 1 and 1/2 t cayenne pepper (might want to leave that out with the new baby), 1 t onion powder, 1 t thyme, 1 t pepper, 1/2 t garlic powder. Just rub it inside and outside of the skin and cook on 250 for 4-5 hours. Every mother should have it. Maybe you already do.
