My other favorite event, just this year, is sand volleyball. Just this year because I have pica. Do you know what pica is? It's a condition that sounds super weird because it is-weird cravings of non-food items. It is pregnancy related, and a side effect if you could call it that, of having anemia and/or mineral deficiency. Sand and dirt (nice fine dirt) looks amazingly appetizing to me. (Yes my family makes endless fun of me for this-I had it pregnant with Abbey also.) Sand and dirt make my mouth water. Really, I'm not kidding. And NO I do not actually EAT it (I remember someone once asking me, "Well how much do you eat a day?" with a look of disgust on her face), I do have enough smarts and possess enough self-control to know that would not be a good idea. I'm not a huge volleyball fan but that beautiful white perfect powdery sand on the court looked delicious and is worth watching a match or two or three.
I think the most boring-est sport of all is water polo. And the men look so silly with their huge chests and legs and teeny tiny butts with teeny tiny suits on that show way too much of their teeny tiny butts. I am glad I caught a glimpse of the sport though because it reminded me that I want to buy one of these for the baby.
A Hanna Anderson pilot cap.
See?
Just as cute.
Not really.
Ha ha! Love your Olympic commentary! I bought one of those pilot caps for our third baby two years ago. Best piece of clothing I ever bought for my kids. Loved it!!
ReplyDeleteMy Mom and I were just philosophizing today (while watching men's water polo) over the necessity of the cute little bow tied under the chin. Especially for the men. Is it for quick release?? That's all we could come up with. Yes, you must buy that darling HA pilot cap. And maybe some subtle message to play water polo will drift into your babie's subconscious. ;) You make me laugh. love you.
ReplyDeleteOh I love those little baby hats, I had both my boys in those - they would be horrified about that. I have been watching the olympics and got up especially early to watch Sally Pearson in the hurdles. Some scoundrel did text us a one stage to ask if Australia was in the Olympics this year!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, you just made me laugh out loud. The baby cap is adorable, but yes, the same version on an adult male: ridiculous. As is the whole water polo thing. No disrespect to these men intended, but I just keep waiting for them to close their eyes and have someone shout "Marco!"
ReplyDeleteha ha ha...hilarious post!!! the sand/dirt craving is something i've heard of before. i think your body is lacking in some vitamin??? glad to hear you don't give in...lol!!!
ReplyDeleteI get pica too, but my craving is detergents. It's so weird. I'm smart like you though and don't eat it. I imagine if I did, it would taste so gross that it would not be as fulfilling as my brain wants me to think.
ReplyDeleteYou just rocked my world with that post! You blew my mind with the dirt and sand.. Funny and yet shocking. I've never been pregnant so i have no idea. Totally not something I expected to read from you today. Hilarious!
ReplyDeleteLOL! so funny! when my mother was pregnant with me she lived down the street from a tire store and she said she loved the smell and had to resist the desire to chew on a piece of a tire!! ha ha ! good luck with the up and coming delivery of your little bundle of joy! just soak it all up! those baby days are the sweetest ones!
ReplyDeleteI had a major pica to ice several years ago. I was super-anemic and needed a blood transfusion. The medical student who took my initial info wrote that I had a major pica to "ice cream." This is now a part of my medical record that every GI doctor and ob/gyn sees. Ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteThen again, a pica to ice cream wouldn't be the worst thing ever.
Okay the last 2 pictures just cracked me up. Yes, now that you mention it, water polo men look ridiculous!
ReplyDeleteI have it every pregnancy...dirt looks irresistible to me. Also, chalk. I have been known to take a tiny bite/lick of the chalk. Sounds crazy now.
ReplyDeletePica to ice cream? I think I have that too!!!
ReplyDeleteI love how you like the more obscure sports. My husband and I were joking that they should have skipping in the summer Olympics, both rhythmic and speed skipping. That would be awesome!
Hmmm...have you heard of bentonite clay? Not sure if it's considered safe while pregnant, but I take it as a good source of iron and minerals. Redmond Clay is the brand I use.
ReplyDeleteNever had Hanna pilot caps, but absolutely LOVED their sleepers and rompers for my little ones. The cotton is so soft and the seams done so they aren't irritating. My 2 YO son is still wearing the one last romper that fits. :(
Great Olympic story! I had heard of Pica, but never knew anyone that had it. Interesting.
ReplyDeleteI hear you on the pica! Only I craved Comet. You know, the stuff you clean your toilets and bathtubs with. The smell, the texture, everything was just so appealing to me and I craved it! So weird. I guess you can just add that to the list of weird pregnancy things.
ReplyDeleteI had those Hanna Andersson hats for all my babies. They looked so cute in them with their big round heads. Ive never seen anyone else put them on their babies though and was afraid they were discontinued when I didn't see them in the last catalog.
ReplyDeleteHAHA!! This post totally made me laugh today. There are actually quite a few Olympic events where teeny tiny suits are involved, and I always want to avert my eyes...ew! Even with chiseled bodies, no one looks good in those suits. Love the HA hat. Love your blog!
ReplyDeleteI was really thrown off guard when my doctor probed me for strange cravings. But I think what you're experiencing must be common for some! Your commentary was so much fun to read, and the pictures gave me a good laugh!
ReplyDeleteAhahaha! Thanks for making me laugh!
ReplyDeletehahaha I would love to see a water polo match with babies and their parents moving them threw the water. That would be much cuter than those men in the ridiculously tiny suits. I enjoyed watching the beach volleyball as well. Not for the appetizing sand though, too funny!
ReplyDeleteI am a water polo player, and I love it... not even your opinions can sway me!
ReplyDeleteMy husband told me yesterday that the sand for olympic volleyball is specifically chosen for its smooth round grains. As opposed to typical beach sand which is coarse and angular. So, I suppose if you had to pick a sand to taste, the olympic sand would be the best option ;)
ReplyDeleteFunniest blog post ever!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a kid I ate dirt, sand and chalk.. but only certain kinds or dirt were good.. during my three pregnancy I wanted to eat dirt.. never did but I used to go down and sweep the basement so I could smell it.. I think I would still like that smell. My Mom had to get rid of the sand box because all that came out in my diaper was sand..
ReplyDeleteso sorry about pica! :( my husband played waterpolo for ucla- pretty sure they're not wearing the caps for looks. ;)
ReplyDeletePica with Abbey and with this baby, maybe it's a girl??? I didn't find out the sex when I was pregnant either, but I love looking for clues and trying to guess. Gotta go for those cheap thrills when you're pregnant.
