Cupboard Clean Out

I love when my cupboards are almost empty the day or two before grocery shop day.  (Of course I am asked by several children, "WHEN are you going to the grocery store?  We have NOTHING to eat!")  But I always take this chance to clean my fridge and freezer and cabinets and get creative with the odds and ends.

This morning I found going-stale pita bread and made a big batch of pita chips.
Salami and pepperoni and ham and cheese that wasn't used since the last grocery shop will be made into calzones for dinner tonight with the two frozen bread loaves I found in the freezer.
The canister of oatmeal and some almonds and coconut flakes were baked into granola.
The extra frosting I made for cookies last week will frost a cake (from a box of course) I found in the cabinet.
I cut up all the fruit into a big fruit salad.
And the Romaine lettuce and tomatoes with the 1/2 container of feta will be accompany the calzones perfectly.
I think we will have english muffin pizzas for lunch.

And then tomorrow we'll be officially ready to fill 'er all up once again.

  1. I love it when a plan comes together! Do you grocery shop once a week? I feel like all I ever do is go to the grocery store. The sad thing is that I even plan our meals out for two months in advance but for some reason I am still behind...

  4. We do that at home as well...I love a good challenge. I can only imagine how much your grocery bill comes up to, I'm thinking several hundred $$ (coupons only go so far).

  5. I do that too. I love to empty things before I refill them be it the sugar, flour container or the fridge. I love Patricks face. Reminds me of my boys when there is NOTHING to eat in the house.

  6. I like my fridge empty too - then I can see everything.

My mom would say that's a horrible thing to say because her fridge was too empty as a kid. My kids hate it too - and start asking me which day is grocery day and "it had better be soon".

  7. I do the same thing. I know this sounds silly, but I'm always afraid someone will see the inside of my fridge and think we don't have food, etc...
I just like to buy fresh and eat fresh daily rather than have a large ammount of food kept in the fridge that will eventually go bad.
I know it's more time consuming to shop daily, but I don't mind. I do have some things that are always kept on hand, but I like when the fridge is kind of empty and cleaned out too.
I think we have the exact same refrigerator.

  8. I remember being younger and telling my mom how we had NOTHING in the house to eat and she always found something. Now when my boyfriend says that there is NOTHING to eat and I roll my eyes at him and go find all the stuff there actually is to eat. Haha

  9. I love doing the same thing, though lately I have realized I need to be picking up more at the grocery store b/c our cupboards and fridge seem to be empty too frequently!

  10. Man, you are a wizard! Coming up with all that food out of random things. I need to be better about that. I'm going to go clean out my fridge right now and see what I can come up with 'cause, it's pretty empty.

  11. Great job coming up with thing to make, and using what you have! We will have to adjust our entire panty this fall as it will just be the two of us. No more school lunches :(

  12. Ha! I love when we hit empty. My husband will question in concern whether the grocery draw is enough, but the kids say I only make the good stuff when I hit rock bottom. I love the creative push :)

  15. I, too, love an almost empty fridge. It is easier to find stuff and less food goes bad. I am convinced we actually *save* money by doing weekly grocery shopping instead of bi-weekly like we usually tend to. Hubby grew up with always empty cupboards and fridge so he *hates* it when the fridge is empty. I have learned over the years to pull everything to the front of the shelves so it looks full when it isn't ;).
Somebody went crazy lately with buying pantry items so I packed up a bag this morning and sent it off to the rescue mission with the other household donations I had going to them. One of their programs is a food pantry so that worked for both of us :)
I've been keeping you and the baby in my thoughts. I hope all is well :D

  16. Like marlow, I get more creative and I dare say the family eats better when the cabinets are bare. I struggle between having enough for an emergency vs hoarding and stockpiling (it feels wrong to have a surplus when so many do without).
