40 Days/ 40 Bags Update With Photos

First quick answer to questions from last week's post:
Do the 3 younger ones always keep their bookshelves looking that clean, tidy and organized?
HECK no.  But I try to keep what is on their shelves really simple like books, Legos, trophies.  I straighten them up occasionally.
What kind of carpet is in the room?
It is a solid color Berber carpet-I wanted the look of sisal.  I actually matched up "real" sisal in the carpet store to get the right look and texture...making sure I went dark enough.
I love those quilts! Especially in the room with the three boys. Did you make them or buy them?
I bought the little boys quilts (the surf theme) at Pottery Barn Kids, and Isaac's navy quilt at Overstock.com.
ok...i love the no top sheet idea!! Can you just buy a fitted sheet? If not what do you do with the top one?
Can you tell us where you get the cotton comforters? Are they 100% cotton and do they not get lumpy like the cheap Target ones do.
The boys have the best comforters underneath but I found them maybe 15? years ago at a discount store like TJ Maxx.  Yes, they are getting a little threadbare having been washed so many times but you know my psycho sentiments about sheets.   I just bought a comforter for Isaac, and yes I can't believe how hard it was to find a 100% cotton comforter-not a duvet filler-those have always gotten lumpy for me.  I found his at JCPenney.  We'll see how it holds up, but it is nice and fluffy so far.  It is also hard to find sheet separates. (They do sell basic solid ones at Linen's n Things.) I usually end up with the set and hang onto the flat sheet.

Here's a couple more rooms I've hit so far with my garbage bags/spring cleaning project.

I repainted my master bathroom again.  For the third time.  It was this pretty color, but I grew tired of it-it just seemed to darken the space too much for me.  I have been wanting to repaint since about a month after I painted it to begin with-yes, for about a year.  I was sick of my procrastination self and just hiked up my boot straps, put on a movie for Patrick (it took two movies I will confess, but a nice lunch break inbetween) and went to work.  I love it much more.  Abbey said, "What a shocker Mom, you painted something light tan."  Oh, funny girl. And Jeff said nothing because I bet he didn't even notice.  Honestly.

My bathroom floor is linoleum.  I know tile would be so much prettier.  Or a wood-I would love it.  But guess what?  Mr. Linoleum has been SO nice to me over the last 6 years I can't bear to tear his heart to shreds.  He is almost always sparkling at me, and when he does get dirty he loves a little 30 second Swiffer clean up and that it all he asks from me.  So undemanding and low maintenance.  He might not be cool, but we've all learned that lesson haven't we?

I keep my bathroom really simple.  It is the master bathroom, which means EVERYONE uses it.  Is it like that in your house, or is it just like that in ours?

In our tiny den/TV room/family room:
I color-coordinated my books and love the way it looks.

My photo albums and extra storage space where I keep my un-filled albums.

My dining room is a cinch to clean and organize because there is hardly a thing in it:

I keep a few games in the side table:

Is this week three or four of Lent?  I don't even know.  Just slowly working my way through.  I've made one trip to Goodwill with my trunk full of bags so far-mostly clothes from the kid's closets and little things here and there.

  1. I've done only the bottom sheet on my kids' beds forever... I thought I was possibly a horrible neglectful mom, but it just made life so much easier. Is it weird if I tell you how much I love you? You make me want to be a better person, but at the same time help me know that I'm okay too. Thank you!!

  4. My oldest never slept under her top sheet, and we always used to tease her. But, it really was easier for her to make her bed and if she got that done, momma was happy! We paired down our home a lot last year, and I am loving it. So much easier to keep up with and we have found we just didn't need all that stuff! And, having had linoleum, tile and wood floors...I can see why you love your linoleum floor especially in a bathroom...super easy to clean!

  7. We don't use the top sheet for the kids either. I've sometimes used the top sheet to make pillow cases or window curtains depending on the colour etc. We have linoleum in our master bath too and its much warmer on our feet in the morning. When we eventually renovate that space I'm sure we'll choose tile or something. It's a small space too. And now I'm off to purge and clean. Thanks for inspiration.

  8. I must admit. I'm envious of all your storage space and your ability to not even use it all! In our old house we have very few closets, so we have to use additional pieces of furniture which makes our house feel full. You've done an amazing job. I just wish I could rent some of your extra storage space from you;-).

  9. I have purchased single sheets (just fitted or just top) at Target as recently as last fall. I honestly do not remember the thread count, but the kids don't care about that!

  12. Wow! I thought my boys were the only ones that didn't use their top sheets! I got tired of finding them scrunched at the bottom of their beds so I just stopped using them altogether. Glad to know that we're not the only ones:)

I love how organized you are. I also love that pencil sharpener - we need one like that. The little hand held one just doesn't cut it:)

  13. I am in awe of how clean and sparse your cabinets are!

Oh and your photo albums. Swoon.

  14. Thought of you yesterday as I pulled my first 7 bags (literally) from my 16year olds room. (scary, I know) I LOVE your project! I have been doing it since you first started! THANK YOU!

  15. Thanks so much for the inspiration! I love seeing the nearly-empty insides of your cabinets and closets (weird, I know). It makes me realize that if you can have so little stuff with five kids, then surely I can get there with two (and one on the way). I always feel lime I have no storage space, but really I do - I just need to use it more wisely. I am down 10 bags/boxes so far this Lent, and I can hardly tell a difference... which tells me I have WAY too much stuff!

    Thanks

  18. I was so happy to see that you don't use a top sheet. I have been going without one ever since my oldest transitioned to a bed, and I love it! My mother, on the other hand, thinks it is just awful that I am not teaching the children how to make a "normal" bed. UGH. I am also happy that somebody else asked about your carpeting - I love it! I have been wanting sisal/seagrass in my bedrooms for years, but didn't know about having something so rough underfoot in a bedroom. Your carpeting is the perfect solution. Your house looks great! You have inspired me to simplify and purge.

  19. I LOVE your 40 Bags, 40 days updates! They inspire me every year. I never get tired of seeing your rooms and the little changes you make. I especially love your simplicity and classic style. You have helped me love my own home. I think every home can be beautiful when it's clean and well organized. Thank you for sharing, Sarah!

    Thanks!

  21. In our last house we only had one bathroom upstairs so all 5 of the kids used our master bathroom. When we moved 2 years ago....we got a house that had a "kid" bathroom in addition to the master. Now we have 6 kids that all use the master bathroom! You are definitely not the only one!

  22. my kids ALL use the master bathroom-- even though we have 3 others. they even keep an extra toothbrush in there so they can brush upstairs.
    it makes me smile.
will there come a time when i don't find wet footprints and piles of little girl clothes on the floor in my bathroom?!
ps. i'm totally going to color coordinate my books-- although it might drive my technical husband cRaZy. :)
to copy one of my friends-- i' m afraid i might be in a 40 bags in 40 months stage of life. i'm smiling that i thought i could organize in preparation for Easter- showing God that i am abundantly grateful. turns out, the only way i'm ever going to get 40 bags in 40 days is with His miraculous GRACE. doesn't it ALWAYS work like that?!!

  23. I recently found your blog and am in love with it! It makes me want to clean out my (tiny!) house and purge! Do you have any pictures of your kitchen cabinets? I know, we are all getting nosy with your life on a blog, but I'm so inspired (plus, as a former Tupperware consultant, I'm a little obsessed with my storage containers, but know its waay more than a family of 4 (soon 4) needs.

I also love that you have the Little House books on your book shelf! I have them too and cant wait to share them with my kiddos! Keep up the amazing work!

Oh, and I've never used a top sheet with my son either, it always was kicked to the bottom or he just slept on top, so off it went! Glad I'm not the only one! Seems like we are all in agreement there!

  24. I love the weekly inspiration of seeing how your 40 Days, 40 Bags challenge is going! Also, I think I spied a copy of Simple Abundance on your bookshelf. My mom gave me a copy the Christmas before I had my son, and one day, I plan on giving a copy to my daughter (if I have one) or a daughter-in-law. It's the perfect bedside table book.

  25. Everything looks great and orderly! This is a great challenge. I had a local thift store come and pick up my bags of clothes and whatnots (ARC).

  26. We just do the fitted sheet here, too. Wal-Mart sells them individually. In fun colors and stripes, too!

  28. you continue to inspire me with your neat spaces. My linen closet would look like that if I didn't have throw blankets in there too. Where to keep them? Also, what can I do to donate toiletries my girls have barely used?

  29. Love this!

What color is your dining room? It's really pretty!
