My boys' closets were the biggest purge. I had collected too many hand-me-downs. Because of the spread of ages (and preferences) here, there are many things that just don't work to be handed down. I went through each of their closets and with the older ones helping, asked them, "Are you ever going to wear this?" Matt answered NO to about 90% of his closet, no kidding. And I loved it, because if an item is just never going to be worn, what is the use of it taking up space? With the younger kids I do purging on my own-so much easier and quicker.
Here is the closet in the room where 3 boys share. It's nice and big and very practical:
Here's Patrick's section:
We hang all shirts and do pants and shorts in the drawer underneath. The baskets hold a couple of pairs of pajamas in one basket and undies and socks in the other. Patrick has grown SO much this winter. He will just make it till warm weather with his long sleeves and pants. I am going to buy a few basic t-shirts and plain khaki shorts for summer to keep it very simple.
Here's Matthew's area. He has space for some toys etc. in the back, but the system is set up the same:
And Andrew's:
In the fourth area I have lots of sizes of sport coats and dress shoes and uniform things stored in this area, and in the drawer below this area I keep soccer/baseball/lacrosse equipment and uniforms that get handed down:
Here is the room the 3 younger boys share. I had the room repainted this winter, and I painted the beds white myself. Matthew and I found his desk on Craig's list-I think it was $30?-and I painted that white also. The shelves are from Home Decorators, quilts from Pottery Barn.
We had some big experiments figuring out how to make one space work for 3 boys. We moved Matt to his own area in our basement at one point and I hated it. It just didn't feel like he was a part of the family so far away and spent too much time alone. So we moved him back up (I swear he was a bit relieved although he begged for his own room) and I decided to turn the shelves out into the room to create a little barrier to give him his own separate space. This also works with the different bedtimes because he can keep a little clip light on longer and not disturb the younger kids.
I think the key to having kids share spaces (especially three!) is to keep things very simple and uncluttered and have very defined spaces. The kids separate book shelves:
Matthew's space:
I made their names with those cardboard letters you can get at craft stores and scrapbook paper. Trace, and then decoupage. Sticky, but easy:
My dad built these underbed storage boxes on wheels and we keep some special toys in these:
I only included this photo because look at that gosh darn silly face in the corner. He had to be in every photo.
Here's Isaac's room. I bought him some much-needed new bedding. The quilt is from Overstocks. (I love that site by the way-I always find great deals!) For all beds in our house we do a fitted sheet, a cotton comforter and a quilt on top of that. It makes bed making very simple and very washable.
His closet purge is back here.
Lots more to show you next week.

Loved seeing your boy's room. I need to get rid of some of my boys' clothes. This looks amazing! Love the letters :)
I love the letters...can't believe how easy they look to make! I totally thought they were from PB...I'll have to steal that idea :). Love your boy's rooms too...so clean, organized, and simple.
You've given me encouragement to go and purge my own boys' closets. Thank you!!
My twins currently have double casts (for tip toe walking) SO we are home A LOT right now therefore I have been doing some major cleaning and organizing and re-thinking spaces, etc. One of the things on my list is painting their bunk beds white. My husband is revolting because even though he is a handy man he is a perfectionist and therefore to him painting is a BIG DEAL.
I want to take it on by myself but definitely feel the pressure of choosing the right paint that will look good AND stand up to twin almost 5 year olds. I'd love to hear how the paint is holding up and some details on your process and paint choices. Thanks so much I'd really appreciate it.
BTW I have almost the same system for closets. We just have two added baskets; one for white t-shirts and one for seasonal stuff (bathing suits, shin guards, etc.). But we also do the drawers underneath for pants. I love it because we don't need to add a dresser in their already small room that they share.
Great post.
thank you for sharing this. Seeing your closets has given me a reality check. NO ONE needs even half the clothes my kids have.
LOL I love that face sneaking into your photos! The rooms look so neat, fresh and organized. I think it's great to define the space. I always did that when I shared rooms with my brothers (yes) and later my sisters. Sometimes it felt like my only space was a locked bathroom!
I'm trying so hard not to be too jealous of those closets. We live in a 120 year old house... yeah, no closets. I know I can take this idea and make it work for us, though...thank you for all of your inspiration!
Oh I love the boy's rooms! And the closet space is awesome! But, I have to ask: Do the 3 younger ones always keep their bookshelves looking that clean, tidy and organized? My oldest used to have bookshelves in her room which housed her dolls and some books, but I ended up get rid of them because it started to look like a cluttered mess!
I started purging in late January and have 1/2 a spare room filled with yard sale worthy stuff, but with baby #3 on the way this fall and some room sharing in order, I could stand to do a little more. I love the calm feeling of your home. BTW, my little guy has the same quilt as Isaac - it took me a long time to find it, but I'm happy with it too.
i LOVE this post.
it is real and has given me some great inspiration as i tackle my girls' bedroom this week-- i have 4 girls in one room.
you are a great mom.
thanks for sharing your life with us!
it's simply, realistically inspiring.
Seeing all of your open space is such an inspiration thank you for sharing your wonderful ideas!
I linked up to your blog http://justsoparenting.blogspot.com/2012/02/i-am-giving-up-clutter-for-lent.html
Love that you share that it's ok to be simple and not have closets jammed with useless stuff.
I am dying to ask. What kind of carpet is in the room?
I am on the hunt for new carpet and I like the color and what looks to be tight weave of yours.
I am trying the 40day/40 bags as well. I will not make it to 40 bags but am on my way. Two big bags went out yesterday...it feels SO good.
I love the letters for the boys room.
I'm inspired! Although, life is WAY too full for me right now. But I'm filling your ideas away for when my current class that I'm taking is over and I can get some things cleared out! You're amazing!
PS. Love the new blog header. Beautiful!
Hi Sarah! Your blog is one of the ten blogs I passed The Versatile Blogger Award on to today! Check it: http://www.montessori-on-a-budget.com/p/versatile-blogger-award.html Best!
You truly inspired me with today's post. We woke up to a snow day and decided to take full advantage of it. So far 7 bags!!! 5 (how did that happen?) from my boys room, 1 from the linen closet and 1 of misc. I rearranged their room to make it more user friendly and they love it. Next up the toy bins and my daughters room (but that might have to wait till Saturday. I'm wiped out). I'm up to 10 bags total so far but to be fair they aren't the huge lawn bags just kitchen sized. Thank You so much for the encouragement and ideas.
Wow! Looks great! I have 2 girls 10 and 6 years old and they have so many clothes, filling their closets, drawers and baskets. It's neat but laundry never seems to end! Time for some paring down here too it's on my list!
Have a great day!
Blessings,
Jill
I loved this post! Thank you for inspiring me to live more simply. You really are an inspiration not just for purging things but for the admirable way you are raising your children.
I love that you don't use flat sheets! I don't either, and it is the best! My 3- and 4-year-olds can easily "make" their beds, and there's no frustration with annoying flat sheets! I'm thinking about adopting your closet system... Thanks for sharing.
Love the little face in the corner. Your rooms are so tidy - my daughter should read this to see if she can tidy her boys rooms!
Love how bright and simple and organized everything is! Since you posted these house pictures you have me curious about your basement bathroom redo! :)
I love how clean, simple, and beautiful your home is! I love that it all looks so uncluttered. But, most of all, I love those quilts! Especially in the room with the three boys. Did you make them or buy them?
ok...i love the no top sheet idea!! Can you just buy a fitted sheet? If not what do you do with the top one? I know you are not wasteful....anyting to make the dreaded sheet changing-bed making chore easier....thanks for all the info.
The boys' rooms are so neat! Can you tell us where you get the cotton comforters? Are they 100% cotton and do they not get lumpy like the cheap Target ones do? If so, I'd love to know! I like to keep my kids' beds simple too, and we like down comforters but I need to buy another one and would like to explore other options. Right now my DS15 is too cold with just two quilts on his bed. Or at least I think he should be too cold...he doesn't complain.
I have 3 younger brothers that all shared a room. The middle Bro, hated it! At one point he moved into the walk in closet which fit a twin bed perfectly! When he was a little older he moved into the treehouse (I kid you not). He lived out there for a few years. That would never fly these days but man has he got some great stories to tell us when we all get together. (FYI no matter how innocent you think your sweet boy is...do not let him live in a treehouse!) :)
Absolutely lovely and inspirational. I will be purging this weekend. Thanks!
Thank you for this post! I have re-read it several times. I am following you on the 40 bags/ 40 days as well. I have to say, this came at a perfect time.. I just found out I am preggo (shh.. lol) with #4, so there will be some room sharing in my kids' future. This post is helping my hubby see that room sharing isn't torture, and less toys, clothes and stuff will be ok :)
thanks again!
Oh man, are you telling me it's ok not to use a top sheet!? I thought this was a dirty little secret I had to keep:)I feel so much better!
erika
When did you get rid of the over the door shoe organizers? You used them for socks and undies didn't you? I loved that idea. I loved it so much that I use the same system for my boys now. They, however, use the throw them under the bed system.
