Encouragement For The Week

"Mothers who know do less. They permit less of what will not bear good fruit eternally. They allow less media in their homes, less distraction, less activity that draws their children away from their home. Mothers who know are willing to live on less and consume less of the world’s goods in order to spend more time with their children—more time eating together, more time working together, more time reading together, more time talking, laughing, singing, and exemplifying. These mothers choose carefully and do not try to choose it all."

  2. One of my favorites of all time. Makes me feel like when I try to do this (even though the world will tell me differently) that I AM actually doing some good.

  4. I love this quote because it isn't another to-do list that makes mothers feel like they don't measure up.

  5. The last line "These mothers choose carefully and do not try to choose it all" is so sensible, true and timely for me. These days I'm trying to be very intentional about what I allow into my life and into our family so that there is time carved out for those things that are most important. Thank you for posting - I love Julie Beck.

  6. I think about this often. I have a WONDERFUL husband who is very full of energy and loves to try to conquer the world in one day. I'm the opposite. I like to keep my life as simple as I can. We often balance each other out very well. This quote reminds me that my effort to keep our life simple and beautiful is one of the most important things I can do as a mom and wife.

  8. The power of "less is more" is so very true!
On the same note: I've decided to cut my time spent on Internet: no more Internet used while my girls are awake and no more Internet after 10PM ( so I get some sleep also ). I hope I'll be able to follow this resolution.
    Have a good week, Sarah!

  9. I love this quote. We have been so busy this last season and I have seen so many negative effects of it on my family. Thank goodness it is slowing down. I cannot allow it to ever get this way again, I hate the out of control feeling I have felt for a few months. Thank You for reaffirming what I feeling. It's good to know I am not alone in my thinking.

  25. Sarah, what I like about you is that you don't just read that quote and think how wise it is, you actually live these words and make choices to put your children and your family first. You inspire me to be a more deliberate mother and to be a "mother who knows." I heard this talk when Julie Beck first gave it, but still haven't applied it as I should. Thank you, Sarah, for the reminder.

  26. You really are a fabulous example of this talk/quote. I also heard it when it was first given and was very overwhelmed by the expectations I felt were in it....over time and as I've grown as a mother I see it so differently.

  27. Today I woke up and realized for the first time since I can remember, the children are in NO activities (basket ball ended on Saturday). None. I honestly, don't think we have had this situation since my oldest (now almost 13) was 3???

Dear Lord, help me to fill these newly discovered space with things that will truly nourish my family, now and eternally.

Thanks for this quote, Sarah...and the constant reminder to strive for less activity.

    Sandy

  33. Julie B. Beck is my idol. She articulates the feelings of my heart and what I aspire to be as a wife and mom so beautifully. I was just re-reading this talk with my husband last night. Love it!

  35. I got tears in my eyes reading this. This is so ME! For years I was criticized by other moms - who I thought were my friends - because I made my girls each pick 2 activities each season/year. I was told that my "problem" was that I liked "to cook and have dinner together" and that I needed to understand that Monday was for McDonald's, Tuesday was for Taco Bell, etc.

  36. Absolutely love this quote, and love Julie beck. Thanks for sharing!

  37. I totally agree. When I juggle too many things, I end up doing all those things very badly. I am still learning to take on a few things (with eternal consequence), and do those things well.

By the way, I was looking at your header and smiled at all the winter photos....I am sitting over here in New Zealand in my T-shirt!
